The young Leonie Rysanek triumphs in her second Met broadcast of the almost four dozen she would do during her astonishing career. Here she is Elizabeth of Valois, married to King Philip II of Spain (Jerome Hines), even though she loves his son, Don Carlo (Giulio Gari). Rysanek's heartbreaking performance fully connects with Elizabeth's passion and despair. Beloved baritone Robert Merrill is Don Carlo's friend, Roderigo, killed by the Inquisition. Blanche Thebom is Princess Eboli and future superstar Martina Arroyo is heard in her Met debut role as the Celestial Voice
La clemenza di Tito by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart( )

20 editions published between 1900 and 2005 in 3 languages and held by 323 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Under James Levine's persuasive and loving leadership, this first-rate cast demonstrates Mozart's late opera crackles with passion and drama. The Roman emperor Tito (Kenneth Riegel) is besieged by death plots, a massive fire in Rome, and his best friend's betrayal. The young Roman patrician Sesto, sung by Tatiana Troyanos in one of her greatest performances, is besotted by the vengeful and manipulative Vitellia (Elizabeth Connell). An enchanting Gail Robinson is Servilia, Sesto's sister, who is desired by the emperor himself but in love with another man

15 editions published between 1990 and 1999 in German and French and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner's mystical opera makes extraordinary demands on the conductor, but James Levine is renowned for the special affection and authority he brings to this transcendent work. The music shimmers and glows, evoking the legendary world of the Knights of the Holy Grail and the pure fool who brings healing power to the land. Peter Hofmann stars as the questing title hero, Jerome Hines sings the wise old man, Gurnemanz, and Mignon Dunn is the voluptuous Kundry, whose erotic temptations almost ensnare the young hero

Smetana's tragic opera 'Dalibor' from 1868 is now acknowledged as a masterpiece, containing some of his greatest music. It tells a tale of knightly ideals, chivalry, love and loyalty, with striking echoes of Fidelio. The story transports us to 15th-century Prague, where Dalibor is imprisoned having avenged the death of his musician friend Zdenk. The sister of his victim, Milada, is touched by his plight and disguises herself as a boy violinist in order to enter the gaol

In the courtyard of the palace of Agamemnon, murdered king of Mycenae, Elektra bemoans her father's murder at the hands of her mother, Klytämnestra, and her mother's lover, Aegisth. She vows vengeance. She is interrupted by her younger sister, Chrysothemis, who urges Elektra to give up her obsession with revenge so they both can lead normal lives. Chrysothemis reappears with news that Orest is dead. Stunned, Elektra tells her sister she must now help kill Klytämnestra and Aegisth. When the girl pulls away in terror and runs off, Elektra starts to dig for the buried ax that killed Agamemnon. She is interrupted by a stranger who says he has come to inform Klytämnestra of Orest's death. When Elektra reveals her name, he tells her Orest lives. Servants come and kiss his hand. The dogs of the house know me, he says, but not my own sister. Crying his name, Elektra falls into Orest's arms and tells him she has lived only for his return. Their reunion is cut short when Orest is summoned before Klytämnestra. He kills both the queen and her lover. Elektra begins an ecstatic dance and when Chryothemis returns, Elektra falls dead
