Trade and the American dream : a social history of postwar trade policy by Susan Ariel Aaronson( )

14 editions published between 1996 and 2015 in English and held by 1,001 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Trade and the American Dream, Susan Aaronson highlights a previously ignored dimension of United States trade policy: public understanding. Focusing on the debate over the three mechanisms designed to govern world trade - the International Trade Organization (ITO), the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and the World Trade Organization (WTO) - she examines how policymakers communicate and how the public comprehends trade policy. As "the American century" draws to a close, the message is clear: the American public's aspirations - indeed, the traditional pursuit of the American Dream - should be reflected in international trade policy. Aaronson suggests ways to create greater public understanding for the GATT/WTO and international trade as America enters the twenty-first century. If national trade policy is to play in Peoria, Americans must first understand it
Trade imbalance : the struggle to weigh human rights concerns in trade policymaking by Susan A Aaronson( Book )

17 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and held by 452 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In many countries, citizens allege that trade policies undermine specific rights such as labor rights, the right to health, or the right to political participation. However, in some countries, policy makers use trade policies to promote human rights. Although scholars, policy makers, and activists have long debated this relationship, in truth we know very little about it. This book enters this murky territory with three goals. First, it aims to provide readers with greater insights into the relationship between human rights and trade. Second, it includes the first study of how South Africa, Brazil, the United States, and the European Union coordinate trade and human rights objectives and resolve conflicts. It also looks at how human rights issues are seeping into the WTO. Finally, it provides suggestions to policy makers for making their trade and human rights policies more coherent. --PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Trade has been an important factor in United States from the 17th century to the present day. The United States was born out of a trade dispute with Great Britain. From the moment the founders first set pen to paper, trade has helped spur U.S. economic growth. This booklet covers trade topics such as policy, perspectives, difference in nations trading, workers rights, barriers, equity issues, consumers outlook, governments involvement, trade disputes, trade impact on the environment, and General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)/World Trade Organization (wto) sovereignty. Concluding the booklet is a glossary and a 22-item list of further readings on trade and related topics. The teacher's guide presents ideas for classroom activities along with a pretest, posttest, and classroom handouts with accompanying answer keys. Goals for students to attain are to understand how trade affects individual daily lives; define concepts relating to trade and economic interdependence; know the different perspectives people have on trade in the world economy; and realize the need for continuing cooperation among nations in order to maintain a balance of trade.
