Waves of democracy : social movements and political change by John Markoff( )

32 editions published between 1994 and 2016 in English and held by 1,586 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The second edition of this classic text covers contemporary democracy movements including the Arab Spring and its aftermath, Occupy, and new nations as well as old issues from the Balkans to Africa, from Latin America to Ukraine. The author has traveled widely around the world to take the pulse of transition and to profile journeys toward democracy and journeys away from democracy, too. At the same time, the book addresses important challenges that have emerged in even well-established democracies. These show up in declining voting rates, diminished membership in political parties, and, in some countries including the United States, negative views of central democratic institutions (like the US Congress).--
Take-down : the pursuit and capture of Kevin Mitnick, America's most wanted computer outlaw--by the man who did it by Tsutomu Shimomura( Book )

8 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 814 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Takedown is Tsutomu Shimomura's own riveting account of the story that has already become a real-life epic for the Information Age - a classic manhunt that, instead of being carried out on crowded urban streets or backcountry roads, is conducted over telephone wires. Angered by the attack on his computer - which is soon followed by a series of threatening phone calls and the malicious scattering of his personal files throughout the internet - Shimomura sets out to learn the identity of his mysterious intruder, armed only with his expertise and an array of high-tech weaponry. With careful forensic work he uncovers a trail of clues that suggests that his quarry is not just a nuisance with a modem, but the "Dark-Side Hacker" himself - a fact that becomes clear when, thanks to an ingenious use of software, Shimomura and the support team he has assembled are able to electronically eavesdrop on an online conversation in which Mitnick reveals himself
The abolition of feudalism : peasants, lords, and legislators in the French Revolution by John Markoff( Book )

11 editions published between 1996 and 2004 in English and held by 523 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the most important results of the French Revolution was the destruction of the old feudal order, which for centuries had kept the common people of the countryside subject to the lords. In this book, John Markoff addresses the ways in which insurrectionary peasants and revolutionary legislators joined in bringing "the time of the lords" to an end and how, in that ending, seigneurial rights came to be central to the very sense of the Revolution. He traces the interaction of peasants and legislators, showing how they confronted, challenged, and implicitly negotiated with one another during the course of events."--Jacket
Revolutionary demands : a content analysis of the Cahiers de doléances of 1789 by Gilbert Shapiro( Book )

10 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 425 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work reports on the methods, and some of the results, of a content analysis of the Cahiers de Doléances, the well-known lists of grievances in which, in 1789, the French people expressed their dissatisfactions with the state of their society and their hopes for a better future. The analysis is an outgrowth of a larger research project, "Quantitative Studies of the French Revolution," conducted by the authors and others over a thirty-year period. The central data of the research for this book are a coding of a national sample of documents representing the views of rural parishes, the Nobility, and the Third Estate. These codes, together with data on the economic, social, and political conditions of the regions of France under the Old Regime and data on political behavior during the revolutionary period, form a computerized data archive to be made available to researchers. In this volume, the hard-science side of the social sciences communicates with the mainstream of the historical profession, a path-breaking achievement of which sociology should be proud: every angle of a key historical data source has been teased out and made available to systematic use, and in a way that really does improve upon historians' prior work
Greetings from Novorossiya : eyewitness to the war in Ukraine by Paweł Pieniążek( )

8 editions published between 2017 and 2018 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In autumn of 2014, the people of Ukraine rose up against their authoritarian president Yanukovych, rallying for democracy and occupying Kiev's main square under the blue flag of the European Union. They were met with bullets from the regime, and the slaughter of a hundred peaceful protesters made the Euromaidan synonymous with moral courage and the yearning for freedom. Yanukovych fled to Russia, and Putin, sensing a potentially existential threat to his own regime, struck back. Employing a noxious brew of mercenaries, propaganda, local agents of influence, fake news, and disguised Russian special forces, Putin quickly acted to split Ukraine in two. In the midst of chaos he had created, he used the opportunity to seize Crimea - the first invasion of sovereign territory by a European power since end of the Second World War. The Russians then turned their attention to building up a largely phony separatist movement in eastern Ukraine, complete with all the trappings of statehood for what they cynically called Novorossiya, New Russia , fueling a bloody civil war. More than ten thousand people, including many innocent civilians, have perished in this conflict so far, with no end in sight. Polish journalist Pawel Pieniazek was among the first to visit the war-torn region, and spent over two years there. Greetings from Novorossiya is his vivid firsthand account of the conflict. Unlike western journalists, thanks to his fluency in both Ukrainian and Russian he was able to gain access and move among all sides in the conflict. He was the first reporter to reach the scene when Russian troops in Ukraine accidentally shot down a civilian airliner, killing 298 people. With powerful color photos, telling interviews from the local population, and Pieniazek's brilliant reportage, this book documents the dramatic events as they transpired. Originally published in Polish, this unique view of history-in-the-making brings to life the tragedy of Ukraine for a western audience. Historian Timothy Snyder provides wider context in his superb introduction and explores the significance of this ongoing conflict at the border of East and West"--Publisher's description
Economists in the Americas by Verónica Montecinos( Book )

9 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Probably no region's economists have had greater public visibility or greater impact on regional and national public policy than Latin America's. Economists in the Americas joins a small but important comparative literature on economics as a profession and is first comparative treatment of the Americas. This edited collection is also first study to examine professional economists in United States and Latin America. No region has been more directly affected by the spread of US economics. A multidisciplinary group of scholars discusses last sixty years of shifting trends in economics in seven countries in Western Hemisphere : Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay and United States. Chapters address history of economics in Americas, role of economists in politics and policy-making, economics education and competing paradigms in the field. This collection points to interconnections among national cases, the forging and breakdown of consensus around state and market dominance, the transnational diffusion of economic ideas and professional norms, and the embrace and rejection of an increasingly Americanized professional identity among Latin American economists. Book will interest policymakers and scholars interested in the comparative history and sociology of economics, development, public policy, international affairs, political science and Latin American studies--Publisher's description
