Christianity in Bakhtin : God and the exiled author by Ruth Coates( )

20 editions published between 1998 and 2005 in English and held by 2,536 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The work of the great Russian theorist Mikhail Bakhtin has been examined from a wide variety of literary and theoretical perspectives. Having established the strong presence of a Christian framework in his early philosophical essays, Ruth Coates explores the way in which Christian motifs, though suppressed, continue to find expression in the work of Bakhtin's period of exile, and re-emerge in texts written during the time of his rehabilitation."--Jacket

Deification in Russian religious thought : between the revolutions, 1905-1917 by Ruth Coates( )

5 editions published in 2019 in English and Undetermined and held by 195 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Deification in Russian Religious Thought considers the reception of the Eastern Christian (Orthodox) doctrine of deification by Russian religious thinkers of the immediate pre-revolutionary period. Deification is the metaphor that the Greek patristic tradition came to privilege in its articulation of the Christian concept of salvation: to be saved is to be deified, that is, to share in the divine attribute of immortality. In the Christian narrative of the Orthodox Church 'God became human so that humans might become gods'. Ruth Coates shows that between the revolutions of 1905 and 1917 Russian religious thinkers turned to deification in their search for a commensurate response to the apocalyptic dimension of the universally anticipated destruction of the Russian autocracy and the social and religious order that supported it. Focusing on major works by four prominent thinkers of the Russian Religious Renaissance-Dmitry Merezhkovsky, Nikolai Berdiaev, Sergei Bulgakov, and Pavel Florensky-Coates demonstrates the salience of the deification theme and explores the variety of forms of its expression. She argues that the reception of deification in this period is shaped by the discourse of early Russian cultural modernism, and informed not only by theology, but also by nineteenth-century currents in Russian religious culture and German philosophy, particularly as these are received by the novelist Fedor Dostoevsky and the philosopher Vladimir Soloviev. In the works that are analyzed, deification is taken out of its original theological context and applied respectively to politics, creativity, economics, and asceticism. At the same time, all the thinkers represented in the book view deification as a project: a practice that should deliver the total transformation and immortalisation of human beings, society, culture, and the material universe, and this is what connects them to deification's theological source. --

Landmarks Revisited by Robin Aizlewood( )

1 edition published in 2013 in Undetermined and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The symposium entitled Vekhi, or Landmarks, is one of the most famous publications in Russian intellectual and political history. Its fame rests on the critique it offers of the phenomenon of the Russian intelligentsia. It was published in 1909, under the editorship of Mikhail Gershenzon, as a polemical response to the revolution of 1905, the failed outcome of which was deemed by all the Landmarks contributors to exemplify and illuminate fatal philosophical, political, and psychological flaws in the revolutionary intelligentsia that had sought it. Its fame persists until today not least because the volume has been deemed by many in Russia and the West to have proven prophetic in its prediction (and urgent warning) that the realization of the intelligentsia?s platform would bring ruin upon Russia. More than any other text, its republication in 1991 symbolically heralded the end of the ideological hegemony of Marxist-Leninism in the Soviet Union

Laboratory investigation on the pumping efficiency of sucker rod pumps at deviated angles, with and without the presence of gas by Ruth Coates( Book )

3 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Summarises research investigating the effects of back pressure, viscosity, and free gas content on the pumping efficiency of sucker rod pumps oriented at inclined angles from vertical to horizontal. Investigators performed 206 experimental tests, using different combinations of the parameters of interest, in a working sucker rod pump model that has the pump barrel and valve cages constructed of Plexiglas to allow direct visual observation of the fluid flow and component operation within the pump. The pump was set up in a flow loop with associated instrumentation to monitor, control, and record pressures, flow rate, pump speed, position, and load. Pumping performance was analysed through visual observation of the working components, with recording of operation on video tape and preparation of dynamometer cards for each test. Results presented include the conditions under which reverse fluid slippage occurs, the reasons for such slippage, the conditions that created hydraulic shock waves in the pump, and the effect of the presence of gas on the slippage of fluids

Hydrodynamic analysis and design criteria of sucker rod pump valves operating at inclined angles by Ruth Coates( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report summarizes research conducted to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of different rod pump valve designs at inclined angles, under both steady- and variable-flow regimes. The researchers performed 81 tests on different valve designs and ball sizes at inclined angles with different fluid viscosities to understand how those factors would affect pump efficiency. They also reconstructed valve cages of plexiglas for direct visual observation and video recording of ball dynamics. A drag coefficient-Reynolds number characteristic was used to indicate whether a particular valve design or valve-ball combination would not operate efficiently at inclined angles. The bulk of the report consists of data from the tests performed in a pressure drop flow loop apparatus

Oxidation state ambiguities in cerium organometallics : a computational approach by Ruth Coates( Book )

2 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Seven cerium organometallic systems are studied using both density functional theory and multiconfigurational techniques in order to better understand the oxidation state of the metal in each of these systems. These calculations show that in formally Ce(IV) organometallic systems with electron-rich, carbon-based ligands the total number of Ce 4f electrons is closer to the formal value of a Ce(III) system, rather than that of a Ce(IV) system. However, there remains a clear distinction between the Ce(III) and Ce(IV) f electron density: a localised f electron being found for Ce(III) system a delocalised f density is identified for the formally Ce(IV) systems. The calculations carried out have been used to rationalise the apparantly contradictory experimental data on the oxidation state of Ce in cerocene, to analyse the claims that cerocene might represent a molecular Kondo system, to rationalise the variable energy photoelectron spectrum of CeCp3 and to speculate about the possibility of synthesising CeCp2X compounds
