L'eclisse by Michelangelo Antonioni( Visual )

93 editions published between 1962 and 2018 in 8 languages and held by 1,090 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

L'Eclisse was the final film in Antonioni's informal trilogy of the modern malaise (following L'Avventura and La Notte), a series of films that redefined the concept of narrative cinema. Filmed in sumptuous black and white and full of scenes of lush, strange beauty, it tells the story of Vittoria (the beautiful Monica Vitti - Red Desert), a young woman who leaves her older lover (Francisco Rabal - Viridiana), then drifts into a relationship with a confident, ambitious young stockbroker (Alain Delon - Le Cercle Rouge). Using the architecture of Rome as a backdrop for this doomed affair, Antonioni achieves the apotheosis of his style in this return to the theme that preoccupied him the most: the difficulty of forming true connections amidst the meaninglessness of the modern world

Severine is a repressed, bored housewife, afraid of intimacy. Her husband, Pierre is kind, devoted, and understanding. Severine is aroused by the idea of domination and debasement, and gentle Pierre is hardly the type of person who would treat her cruelly in order to receive sexual gratification. Following the example of an acquaintance, she begins a double life as the girl called Belle de Jour, in the brothel run by Madame Anais. Her otherwise placid domestic life is threatened when an obsessed client, unable to possess her completely, begins to stalk her

Viridiana by Luis Buñuel( Visual )

114 editions published between 1961 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 581 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Luis Bunuel's controversial film classic was denounced by the Vatican after its release in 1961. After leaving behind her life as a nun, the young Viridiana is confronted with the depravity and poverty of the world outside the convents walls. Beware of charity appears to be the message that permeates Bunuel's satire, but a deeper theme is the hypocrisy of the Catholic church and Spanish society in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. In one famous scene Bunuel arranged the dwarves and lepers that Viridiana invites into her home to reflect Leonardo Da Vinci's painting The Last Supper. This was the first flm that Bunuel had made in his native Spain in thirty years, and it is a stinging indictment of the insulated and undemocratic social conditions that existed in Franco's Spain at the time. The film was shot in Spain with a script that the Spanish censors had approved in advance. By the time the authorities realized the subversive nature of the film, the negative and original materials had already been removed to France. Further complicating the issue for the Spanish authorities was the fact that the film was nominated to represent Spain at Cannes where it won the Palm D'Or. In the aftermath of the success of the film at Cannes, the head of the Spanish film bureau was dismissed, and the film was banned from Spanish cinemas
