Elmer Bischoff : the ethics of paint by Susan Landauer( Book )

4 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 618 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Elmer Bischoff (1916-1991) is generally regarded as one of the leaders among the artists in the San Francisco Bay Area who, after contributing to the local emergence of Abstract Expressionism during the 1940s and 50s, shifted the terms of their spectacularly sensual brushwork to recognizable imagery. Bill Berkson writes that if "David Park was the classicist of the founding triad of the Bay Area Figurative painters, and Richard Diebenkorn the modernist, Bischoff was the romantic." Designed to accompany a major retrospective of Bischoff's work, this volume is illustrated with duotones and color plates that faithfully capture the subtle variations in shade that characterize the painter's oeuvre. Berkson and Susan Landauer, both of whom knew Bischoff, provide the definitive view of the life, art, and teaching career of this important artist."--Jacket

Peter Saul by Peter Saul( Book )

7 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Inspired to a creative breakthrough after glancing at a copy of Mad magazine, promoted by the Surrealist Matta, and discovered in Paris, American artist Peter Saul [b.1934] has created often difficult, funny, and trenchant works - "sick jokes," according to Robert Storr. His paintings have taken on subjects ranging from embarrassing personal foibles to important events in American history such as the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, end the atrocities at Abu Ghraib. Given the ongoing lack of recognition for the work of this controversial, influential, and pioneering artist, a deeper examination of Saul's career is Long overdue." "This publication provides the first comprehensive overview of five decades of Peter Saul's paintings and drawings. It features works from the early 1960s through the present, including his first "icebox" painting, examples of his epic historical canvases, satiric works poking fun at art history's sacred cows, paintings that painfully evoke the multiple psychic hazards of being an aging male, and recent works that point to the immorality of current political affairs. Essays by Dan Cameron and Michael Duncan as well as an interview with the artist by Robert Storr illuminate this body of work."--Jacket
Jack Goldstein x 10,000 by Jack Goldstein( Book )

7 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 183 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This important retrospective volume highlights Jack Goldstein's far-reaching influence. During the late 1970s, Jack Goldstein helped initiate an avant-garde art movement informally known as the "Pictures Generation." Along with fellow artists such as Sherrie Levine, Robert Longo, and Troy Brauntuch, Goldstein merged the concerns of Conceptual art with media issues raised by Pop art and helped initiate a paradigm shift in art that focused on the critical examination of images. Goldstein's films of the mid-1970s, amond his most recognized achievements, appropriated and restaged imagery that referenced its media sources. This companion volume to a new retrospective of Goldstein's work, organized by the Orange County Museum of Art, includes stills from these films as well as reproductions of sculptures, records, installations, paintings, and text-based works to show the breadth of his artistic production. while many of his close associates enjoyed popular and critical success in the 1990s, Goldstein disappeared from the public eye for years. And although he enjoyed renewed acclaim at the turn of the twenty-first century, his career ended tragically with his death in 2003. Featuring critical essays along with Goldstein's last interview, which was previously unpublished, this volume helps restore an important artist to the stature he and his work deserve"--
