HIV/AIDS in the Middle East and North Africa : the costs of inaction by Carol Lynn Jenkins( Book )

10 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recent evidence suggests that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is increasing in the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Mediterranean (MENA/EM) region, and that the total number of AIDS-related deaths has risen almost sixfold since the early 1990s. Although this figure is low compared with those for Africa, South Asia, and the Caribbean, low prevalence does not equal low risk. The situation can change rapidly, and even conservative estimates indicate that AIDS poses a real threat to the regionʹs long-term growth. This book reviews the current knowledge available on the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the MENA/EM region with the goal of stimulating discussion among policy- and decisionmakers. In other regions, early investments in good surveillance and effective prevention programs have proved to be relative bargains, compared with the costs of a full-blown epidemic. As the authors argue, the time to act is now, while prevalence levels are still low. To that end, they make specific recommendations and offer best practices and case studies from around the world. -- Back cover

Preventing HIV/AIDS in young people : a systematic review of the evidence from developing countries by David A Ross( )

10 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Young people are particularly vulnerable to HIV: 15-24 year olds account for 50 percent of new cases. Five to six thousand youths become infected every day, most of them in developing countries. The UN General Assembly Special Session on AIDS in June 2001 set a number of goals to drive efforts to reduce prevalence in this age group. This report provides evidence-based recommendations for policy-makers, program managers and researchers to guide efforts towards meeting the UN goals on HIV/AIDS and young people. These goals aim to decrease prevalence and vulnerability; and to increase access to information, skills and services. This report provides a systematic review of the effectiveness of interventions provided: through schools, health services, mass media, communities, and to young people who are most vulnerable to HIV infection.--Publisher's description

The UNAIDS report by Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS( Book )

4 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report highlights the achievements of the UNAIDS in leading the worldwide action against HIV/AIDS. Progress is reported in several fronts. One is the successful implementation of a country-by-country reporting system for tracking HIV/AIDS. UNAIDS also takes the lead role in mobilizing national leadership, involving people living with HIV/AIDS, promoting broad-based action in countries, leading the World AIDS Campaign, brokering alliances, and mobilizing resources for an expanding epidemic. Moreover, it helps to reduce the spread of HIV by promoting condom use, use of women-controlled barriers to HIV, voluntary counseling and testing, helping HIV-positive mothers to have healthy babies, preventing HIV and sexually transmitted diseases in high risk groups, and the search for a vaccine. Finally, progress has been made in providing care and support for people living with AIDS and alleviating its impact.--Publisher's description
