The fortunes of Perkin Warbeck : a romance by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley( Book )

10 editions published between 1996 and 2006 in English and held by 112 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Perkin Warbeck was born in the later half of the 15th century. Around 1490, the teenage Warbeck announced that he was actually Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York and son of King Edward IV of England. The real Richard is famous as one of the two young "princes in the tower" whose fate is lost in history. Because of the mysterious situation of the tower, it was unclear whether Richard had died or not. As a result, along with a movement to overthrow King Henry VII, Warbeck gained several prominent followers. He became a legitimate threat to King Henry VII and the Tudor dynasty. Mary Shelley's 1830 novel titled "The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck" is a fictionalized account of Warbeck's life and times. Shelley proclaims that he was in fact Richard of York and follows the young man as he ventures through England and Europe. The character of Warbeck is similar to Mary's husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley

"The grand Napoleon of the realms of rhyme" : Byron and history by Doucet Devin Fischer( )

6 editions published between 1989 and 1990 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The texture of Byron's poems and the patterns of allusion within the prose commentary he supplied for them in the form of prefaces, dedications, notes, papers, and appendices display his commitment to an activist aesthetic, a partisan poetics, and the facts of history. I have positioned the four cantos of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, the two Venetian dramas, and the Siege cantos of Don Juan within the prose context Byron himself created for them, and, further, have situated his poems against the shifting background of political and literary events occurring as he was writing. Such placement suggests what the record of contemporary response confirms: Byron's poems were responses to historical events; his heroes and narrators, creations of the historical moment. The presence of history in Byron's poems and their explicit political purposes challenge Hazlitt's view of Byron as an isolated romantic egotist
