Correspondence, speeches, writings, notes, original muster rolls and pay rolls from the Mexican War, photographs, printed matter, and miscellaneous material relating chiefly to information collected by Smith on the Mexican War in which he served and to American survivors of the conflict. Includes Mexican War muster rolls dating 1847 from the Virginia Regiment, U.S. Army, and the North Carolina Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, and lists of clothing issued and lists of veterans in the early twentieth century. Smith family papers reflect the life of a Southern family in the nineteenth century, active in the Confederacy and the Civil War.
