Luchino Visconti's The Leopard (Il Gattopardo) is an epic on the grandest possible scale. The film recreates, with nostalgia, drama, and opulence, the tumultuous years of Italy's Risorgimento, when the aristocracy lost its grip and the middle classes rose and formed a unified, democratic Italy. Burt Lancaster stars as the aging prince watching his culture and fortune wane in the face of a new generation, represented by his upstart nephew (Alain Delon) and his beautiful fiancée (Claudia Cardinale). Awarded the Palme d'Or at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival, The Leopard translates Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel, and the history it recounts, into a truly cinematic masterpiece. This release boasts a stunning digital transfer from the original 70mm negative materials, with restored image and sound, supervised by director of photography Giuseppe Rotunno and is presented in its original wide screen aspect ratio.--Kanopy

Continuing to explore the theme of societal decay that he addressed in earlier films such as, The Leopard and Rocco And His Brothers, director Visconti's, The Damned, describes the collapse of a wealthy German industrialist family during the period leading up to World War II. Capitalizing on the build up of the armed forces in Germany, the Essenbeck family has started to do business with the Nazi Party. As Germany spirals towards facism, members of the Essenbeck family are divided in their political sympathies. When patriarch, Baron Joachim von Essenbeck, is murdered, Herbert Thalmann, the firm's vice president and a fervent anti-Nazi, is accused of the crime. Visconti portrays the Night of the Long Knives, during which Hitler decimated his political opponents, as an extended orgy. SS officers and their minions drink champagne, while their less ideologically committed colleagues are massacred

Set in the 1860s during the years of the Risorgimento - the making of modern Italy - which saw the emergence of the bourqeoisie at the expense of the landed aristocracy. Visconti clearly identified with Don Fabrizio ('the Leopard'), the ageing patriarch of an aristocratic Sicilian family. He is the first to understand the inevitability of the changes. 'If everything is to remain the same, everything must change' is the cynical observation of Don Fabrizio's young nephew, Tancredi, who adjusts to the new order in a manner impossible for Fabrizio. Lampedusa's novel, steeped in lethargy and inertia, was filmed by Visconti in the enervating Sicilian summer. The film culminates in the ball scene which stands as a kind of metaphor for transformiso - the emergence of a new order as reactionary as the old
