[Northern fur seal rookeries, St. Paul Island, Pribilof Islands, Alaska] by Charles Haskins Townsend( )

1 edition published in 1898 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Maps were produced in the aftermath of the Bering Sea controversy (1886-1893) between Great Britain and the United States concerning the right of Canadians not licensed by the United States to carry on open-sea seal fishing in the Bering Sea, over which the United States claimed jurisdiction. An international tribunal in Paris rejected U.S. claims and imposed restrictions on pelagic sealing. The ruling was an important early example of seeking international consensus on environmental matters. A joint commission of scientists from Great Britain and the United States further studied the problem and argued that open-sea sealing needed to be curtailed. Finally, the North Pacific Fur Seal Convention of 1911 severely curtailed the sealing industry
