Fender studied with Dorothy Perkins alongside Rosella Hightower and Yvonne Choteau. Perkins had studied with Enrico Cecchetti, considered by many as one of the greatest teachers in ballet history. Fender performed on television in Canada and with Jack Cole in Los Angeles, among others. Fender worked as a teacher and director of the ballet school in Walnut Creek, California that she established in 1976. She has also been the artistic director and principal choreographer of the Ballet Joyeux, the performing arm of her school. Many of Fender's students have had professional careers as principal dancers, among them Elizabeth Loscavio (San Francisco Ballet and the Hamburg Ballet Company in Germany) and Rachel Greenwood (San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Northwest, Smuin Ballet)
