Understanding strategic interaction : essays in honor of Reinhard Selten by Wulf Albers( Book )

4 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Strategic interaction occurs whenever it depends on others what one finally obtains: on markets, in firms, in politics etc. Game theorists analyse such interaction normatively, using numerous different methods. The rationalistic approach assumes perfect rationality whereas behavioral theories take into account cognitive limitations of human decision makers. In the animal kingdom one usually refers to evolutionary forces when explaining social interaction. The volume contains innovative contributions, surveys of previous work and two interviews which shed new light on these important topics of the research agenda. The contributions come from highly regarded researchers from all over the world who like to express in this way their intellectual inspiration by the Nobel-laureate Reinhard Selten
Optimierung betrieblicher Systeme auf der Basis von Geschäftsprozessmodellen by Martin Strobel( Book )

4 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in German and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Efficient Coordination in Weakest-Link Games by Arno Riedl( )

6 editions published in 2011 in English and German and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Existing experimental research on behavior in weakest-link games shows overwhelmingly the inability of people to coordinate on the efficient equilibrium, especially in larger groups. We hypothesize that people are able to coordinate on efficient outcomes, provided they have sufficient freedom to choose their interaction neighborhood. We conduct experiments with medium sized and large groups and show that neighborhood choice indeed leads to coordination on the fully efficient equilibrium, irrespective if group size. This leads to substantial welfare effects. Achieved welfare is between 40 and 60 percent higher in games with neighborhood choice than without neighborhood choice. We identify exclusion as the simple but very effective mechanism underlying this result. In early rounds, high performers exclude low performers who in consequence 'learn' to become high performers

A comparison of punishment rules in repeated public good games an experimental study by Torsten Decker( Book )

5 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this experimental study we analyse three collective and one individual punishment rule in a public good setting. We show that under all punishment rules cooperation is stronger and more sustainable than reported from settings without punishment. Moreover, we present evidence and explanations for differences between the rules concerning punishment intensity, contribution and profit levels, as well as justice. Finally, we investigate influences crucial to participants' support for a collective rule when the individual rule is the status quo. We show that beside profit differences the degree of consent required by the collective rule is essential for the degree of support by the participants. -- cooperation ; experiment ; public good ; free-riding ; punishment institution

Inequality aversion, efficiency, and maximin preferences in simple distribution experiments by Dirk Engelmann( Book )

2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We present simple one-shot distribution experiments comparing the relative im-portance of efficiency, maximin preferences and inequality aversion, as well as the relative performance of the fairness theories by Bolton and Ockenfels (2000) and Fehr and Schmidt (1999). While the Fehr and Schmidt model performs better in a direct comparison, this appears to be due to being in line with max-imin preferences. More importantly, we find that the influence of both efficiency and maximin preferences is stronger than that of inequality aversion. We discuss potential implications our results might have for the interpretation of other experiments
Differentiated product markets: an experimental test of two equilibrium concepts by R.J.A.P Peeters( Book )

2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In markets with differentiated products Bertrand-Nash equilibria in pure strategies may not exist. Mixed strategies are difficult to calculate. For these cases Morgan and Shy (2000) suggest an alternative solution concept, the undercut-proof equilibrium (UPE). While the Nash-equilibrium is motivated by the question of how ones own behavior influences one''s payoff, the UPE is motivated by the question of how others'' behavior influence one''s payoff. We report on an experiment where we test these two concepts with respect to their comparative statics. Moreover we investigate the nature of subjects'' underlying thinking process. Our results provide strong evidence against the UPE and in favor of Bertrand-Nash
Bidding behavior in the bisection auction : an experimental investigation by Elena Grigorieva( Book )

2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We present a laboratory experiment in which we investigate bidding behavior with independent private values in the recently proposed bisection auction, and compare it with two classical auction formats - the Vickrey auction and the English auction. We test whether subjects behave strategically equivalent, following the dominant truth-telling strategy, as predicted by theory. Furthermore, we provide some insights concerning the learning process, the efficiency of allocation, and the revenue to the auctioneer. Data show that the bisection auction performs better than the Vickrey auction and only in some terms worse than the English auction

The invariant method is manipulable by László Á Kóczy.( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We show that the invariant method (Pinski and Narin, 1976), recently axiomatised by Palacios-Huerta and Volij (2004), and used to quality-rank academic journals is subject to manipulation: a journal can boost its performance by making additional citations to other journals
