21 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 557 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Why does oppression by censorship affect the film industry far more frequently than any other mass media? Silencing Cinema brings together the key issues and authors to examine instances of film censorship throughout the world. Including essays by some of today's leading film historians, the book offers groundbreaking historical research on film censorship in major film production countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia/Soviet Union, India, China, and Nigeria, among others. The contributors explore such innovative themes and topics as film censorship and authorship, genre, language, religion, audiences, political economy, international policy, and colonialism. This exciting collection is thoroughly unique in its broad geographical scope and its comprehensive look at film censorship."--Publisher's description

The Routledge companion to new cinema history by Daniël Biltereyst( )

14 editions published between 2019 and 2020 in English and Undetermined and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Routledge Companion to New Cinema History presents the most recent approaches and methods in the study of the social experience of cinema, from its origins in vaudeville and traveling exhibitions to the multiplexes of today. Exploring its history from the perspective of the cinemagoer, the study of new cinema history examines the circulation and consumption of cinema, the political and legal structures that underpinned its activities, the place that it occupied in the lives of its audiences and the traces that it left in their memories. Using a broad range of methods from the statistical analyses of box office economics to ethnography, oral history, and memory studies, this approach has brought about an undisputable change in how we study cinema, and the questions we ask about its history. This companion examines the place, space, and practices of film exhibition and programming; the questions of gender and ethnicity within the cinematic experience; and the ways in which audiences gave meaning to cinemagoing practices, specific films, stars, and venues, and its operation as a site of social and cultural exchange from Detroit and Laredo to Bandung and Chennai. Contributors demonstrate how the digitization of source materials and the use of digital research tools have enabled them to map previously unexplored aspects of cinema's business and social history and undertake comparative analysis of the diversity of the social experience of cinema across regional, national, and continental boundaries

Moralizing cinema : film, Catholicism and power by Daniël Biltereyst( )

12 editions published between 2014 and 2018 in English and held by 172 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Contrary to most other edited volumes and monographs on film and religion, 'Moralizing Cinema' does not focus upon films - such as the representation of biblical figures, religious themes in films, the fidelity question in movies - but rather looks beyond the film text, content or aesthetics, by concentrating on the cinema-related actions, strategies and policies developed by the Catholic Church and Catholic organizations in order to influence cinema
Mapping movie magazines : digitization, periodicals and cinema history by Daniël Biltereyst( )

14 editions published in 2020 in English and Undetermined and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Movie magazines are crucial but widely underused sources for writing the history of films and cinema. This volume brings together for the first time a wide variety of historic research of movie magazines and film trade journals, reflecting on the issue of using these sources for film/cinema historiography and on the impact of digitization processes. Mapping Movie Magazines explores this debate from different disciplinary perspectives, enlightened by case studies from the use of early film trade press to pedagogical uses of digitized periodicals. The volume explores Hollywood's grip on movie magazines, gender in film journalism, typologies of unknown trade press and movie magazine markets, and subversive Tijuana bibles."--

Broadcasting is an important indicator of a society's political, economical, social, cultural and geographical context. While currently at a crossroads, European broadcasting remains highly diverse due to the fragmentation of national policies. The book introduces the reader to the topic by providing and explaining facts, figures and techniques of analysis. The contributions to the first section of Western Broadcasting examine the general theoretical framework. The articles in the second section map out European media cases. Youth culture in global cinema by Timothy Shary( )

2 editions published in 2021 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Coming of age is a pivotal experience for everyone. So it is no surprise that filmmakers around the globe explore the experiences of growing up in their work. From blockbuster U.S. movies such as the Harry Potter series to thought-provoking foreign films such as Bend It Like Beckham and Whale Rider, films about youth delve into young people's attitudes, styles, sexuality, race, families, cultures, class, psychology, and ideas. These cinematic representations of youth also reflect perceptions about youth in their respective cultures, as well as young people's worth to the larger society. Indeed, as the contributors to this volume make plain, films about young people open a very revealing window on the attitudes and values of cultures across the globe. Youth Culture in Global Cinema offers the first comprehensive investigation of how young people are portrayed in film around the world. Eighteen established film scholars from eleven different national backgrounds discuss a wide range of films that illuminate the varied conditions in which youth live. The essays are grouped thematically around the issues of youthful resistance and rebellion; cultural and national identity, including religion and politics; and sexual maturation, including gender distinctions and coming-of-age queer. Some essays engage in close readings of films, while others examine the advertising and reception of films or investigate psychological issues. The volume concludes with filmographies of over 700 youth-related titles arranged by nation and theme

Verboden beelden : de verborgen geschiedenis van filmcensuur in België by Daniël Biltereyst( Book )

4 editions published in 2020 in Dutch and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
