Textile messages : inscribed fabrics from Roman to Abbasid Egypt by Textiles from the Nile valley meeting( Book )

11 editions published in 2006 in English and German and held by 133 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The practice to supply textiles with inscriptions is well known in Egypt from Pharaonic times onwards. Nevertheless systematic studies on inscribed fabrics have been neglected until the middle of the 1990s when they almost simultaneously caught the interest of various scholars. This illustrated volume is a first compilation of what is known on the subject so far. It concentrates on textiles of the first millennium AD, a period of changing cultures, religions and languages in Egypt, mirrored by the Greek, Coptic and Arabic inscriptions on the fabrics. The emphasis lies on the historical, linguistic, sociological and artistic aspects of these textiles. Numerous fabrics from international collections are introduced. Further articles deal with the radiocarbon dating and technical aspects."--Jacket
Egypt : faith after the pharaohs by Cäcilia Fluck( Book )

7 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 130 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first millennium in Egypt saw a transition from an ancient pantheon of pagan gods to the one God of the three Abrahamic faiths. Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities were established in succession and peacefully co-existed for long periods of time periodically interrupted by conflict and violence, each faith responding to pre-existing traditions by either rejecting earlier artistic ideas or by adapting and assimilating them. Over 300 objects have been specially selected for this publication, drawing on the significant collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the British Museum and reflecting the rich cultural diversity of the Nile Valley from the first to the twelfth century AD. Through beautiful works of art, including jewellery, painted panels, textiles, sculpture, calligraphy, manuscripts, glass and ceramics, we gain a better understanding of the lives of ordinary and extraordinary people in this important period in Egyptian history. The book also reveals the different types of sacred buildings - synagogue, church, and mosque - and explains their architectural history and dissemination in Egypt

Città-capitale e Deserto-monastico : Atti del convegno (Genova, 11-12-13 novembre 2010) by Beat Brenk( )

1 edition published in 2015 in Italian and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wissenschaft und Turbulenz Wolfgang Fritz Volbach, ein Wissenschaftler zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen by Elisabeth Ehler( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in German and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
