In June 2006, seventeen scientists and educators selected by the National Academies, the Academy of Sciences of Iran, and the Academie des Sciences of France held a workshop at the estate of the Fondation des Treilles in Toutour, France, to discuss issues concerning the role of science in the development of modern societies. Setting the stage for international spent nuclear fuel storage facilities : international workshop proceedings by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

9 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in English and held by 82 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In May 2003, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Academies organized an international workshop in Moscow on the scientific issues relevant to the establishment and operation of an international spent nuclear fuel storage facility in Russia. Given the broad international interest in this topic, the academies organized a second international workshop on important issues that were not on the agenda or were not adequately discussed at the first workshop. These issues included international monitoring at the facility, transportation requirements, liability and insurance concerns, and status of Russian legislation and regulations that are important in locating and operating a facility. Relevant experience from Europe, the United States, and Asia was also considered in this 2005 workshop. This book contains the papers presented at the 2005 workshop sessions, as well as proceedings from the 2003 workshop. Together they provide an overview of the issues, and useful background for those organizations and individuals involved in further development of an international spent nuclear fuel storage facility in Russia

U.S.-Iran engagement in science, engineering, and health (2000-2009) : opportunities, constraints, and impacts by Glenn E Schweitzer( Book )

8 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During the first decade of the 21st century, the National Academies, working with a number of partner organizations in Iran, carried out a program of U.S.-Iran engagement in science, engineering, and health (herein referred to as science engagement). This book reviews important aspects of the science engagement program, including: (a) objectives of the program, (b) opportunities and constraints in developing the program, and (c) scientific and political impacts of the activities. Suggestions for future activities that draw on the conclusions and recommendations that have emerged from workshops and other types of interactions are set forth. Of course, the political turmoil within Iran and uncertainties as to the direction of U.S.-Iran government-to-government relations will undoubtedly complicate initiation and implementation of new science engagement activities in the near term. At the same time, many American and Iranian participants and important government officials in the United States and Iran have believed that science engagement can contribute to the evolution of an improved political environment for development of less adversarial relations between the two governments."--

Biological science and biotechnology in Russia : controlling diseases and enhancing security( Book )

6 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In July 2005, the National Academies released the report Biological Science and Biotechnology in Russia: Controlling Diseases and Enhancing Security. The report offered a number of recommendations that could help restore Russia s ability to join with the United States and the broader international community in leading an expanded global effort to control infectious diseases. A proposed bilateral intergovernmental commission could play a pivotal role toward that end as cooperation moves from assistance to partnership. The report proposed the establishment of two model State Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance Centers in Russia, more focused support of competitively selected Russian research groups as centers of excellence, the promotion of investments in biotechnology niches that are well suited for Russian companies, and expanded opportunities for young scientists to achieve scientific leadership positions in Russia. Also, the report highlighted the importance of U.S. programs that support the integration of former Soviet defense scientists with civilian researchers who had not been involved in military-related activities
Cleaning up sites contaminated with radioactive materials : international workshop proceedings by Glenn E Schweitzer( Book )

5 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines national security controls that oversee scientific and technological research, specifically the federal regulations governing which information or goods can be shared with citizens of other countries. These restrictions are designed to prevent the flow of information or technology out of the U.S. and into the hands of foreign competitors or those who may wish to use it for harm. The book looks at how the world has changed since these national security controls were enacted, identifies the effects they have had on scientific and technological research in the U.S., and makes recommendations on how the system should be restructured to strengthen both national security and economic competitiveness

Science as a gateway to understanding : international workshop proceedings, Tehran, Iran by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In October 2007, the U.S. National Academies and the Iranian Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Science organized the first of a series of planned U.S.-Iranian workshops on the topic "Science as a Gateway to Understanding." This new workshop series is a component of the broader effort of the National Academies to support bilateral workshops and exchange visits in a variety of fields with a number of Iranian institutions that began in 2000. This book includes papers that were presented at the workshop and summaries of the discussions that followed some of the presentations. At the conclusion of the workshop there was general agreement that the presentations on many aspects of science and scientific cooperation that have a bearing on mutual understanding were an important first step. Several participants underscored that the next workshop should emphasize how scientific cooperation can lead in concrete terms to improved understanding among both academic and political leaders from the two countries
