Degas at the races by Jean Sutherland Boggs( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 572 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Of all the impressionist painters who sought ways to represent and express the modern world, only Degas was consistently attracted to the world of horses and jockeys. He was captivated by the beauty, power, and grace of the horse in much the same way that he was fascinated by the agility of ballet dancers. This beautiful book, the catalogue of an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, discusses in detail the importance of the horse in Degas' work and includes reproductions of more than 120 of Degas' paintings, drawings, pastels, prints, and sculpture relating to the horse and racing
In the forest of Fontainebleau : painters and photographers from Corot to Monet by Kimberly Jones( Book )

19 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 517 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Forest of Fontainebleau, located about 50 miles southeast of Paris, held a singular place in 19th-century art. Variously called "savage," "wild," "romantic," and "beautiful" by visitors, Fontainebleau's topography was viewed in many ways that reflected the sensibilities of the time. This is the first English-language publication to examine the significance of the region to the plein-air tradition in France. The book highlights four pivotal figures in the evolution of landscape painting: Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, The;odore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet, and Claude Monet. It integrates into this history the photographers who worked at Fontainebleau, including Eugène Cuvelier and Gustave Le Gray, and explores the role the forest played in the development of early photography. It also considers the reception of paintings of Fontainebleau at the Salons and the influence of Fontainebleau on the advent of Impressionism." http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0828/2007044350-d.html
Degas Cassatt by Kimberly Jones( Book )

13 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This surprising study examines the extent to which Mary Cassatt influenced the work of her contemporary Edgar Degas. Edgar Degas's influence upon Mary Cassatt has long been acknowledged, but her role in shaping his artistic production and in preparing the way for his warm reception in America is fully examined for the first time. These two major figures of the impressionist movement shared a keen observer's eye, as well as an openness to experimentation. Despite differences of gender and nationality, they built a deep friendship based on mutual respect and admiration for each other's talents. Focusing on the critical period from the late 1870s through the mid-1880s, when Degas and Cassatt were most closely allied, this book brings together some seventy works in a variety of media to examine the fascinating artistic dialogue that developed between these two celebrated artists. Technical analysis provides new insight into the intersections between their art in terms of choice of media and methods as well as subject matter. The authors also examine the artists' participation in the unrealized collaborative impressionist publication Le Jour et la nuit, which resulted in some of their most exceptional prints. Another focus is a series of prints, pastels, and paintings produced by Degas on the theme of Mary Cassatt at the Louvre. A number of works exchanged between the two artists serve as a tangible testament to the affinity between Degas and Cassatt and show both artists as collectors and champions of each other's art."--Publisher description
