The encyclopedia of ghosts by Daniel Cohen( Book )

2 editions published in 1991 in French and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Bell Witch ... The Amherst Poltergeist ... The moving coffins of Barbados ... The skull of Wardley Hall ... The Phantom Hitchhiker ... Just their names conjure up a world filled with mystery and, for some, fear. As Daniel Cohen writes in his introduction to THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF GHOSTS, "people either believe in ghosts or they don't. They are either afraid of them or they are not. But there is a paradox here, for those people who believe most deeply in the possibility of contact between the living and dead are those who are most likely to regard ghosts as benign and comforting presences, while people who don't really believe in ghosts are most likely to regard them as some sort of horrible visitation and are absolutely terrified of meeting one." The subject of ghost is one that starts from pre-history and continues right through the present day. The worlds of the most primitive civilizations are filled with ghosts and so is our modern age. The list is endless: from the ghost of Aaron Burr to the mysterious message of Harry Houdini; from the Brown Lady of Raynham Hall (who's ghostly photograph actually exists and can be found within this book) to the Winchester Mystery House, 400 years of ghostly history comes alive, so to speak, in Daniel Cohen's THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF GHOSTS."--Jacket
