Monitoring the pilot : the Moray House Institute PGCE (Secondary) by Janet Powney( Book )

2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Spring 1992, the Scottish Ofice Education Department invited Moray House Institute of Education to test the feasibility of a more school-based approach to teacher training. In this PGCE (Secondary) course, students increased the amount of time in school. The increase in time was accompanied by other changes in the organisation of placements and the support provided for students. The main feature of the support was the introduction of mentors, teachers who would have special responsibility, and time allocated, for supporting students. Three regional educational authorities in the east of Scotland, 10 schools and nearly 100 students took part. The study aimed to monitor the views of students, school and college staff in the following areas: the extended period of school experience; the balance and partnership between colleges, schools, and regional education authorities; mentor preparation and what it was like to be a mentor; organizational structures necessary to support the changes; and resource implications. Surveys were complemented by school case-studies, interviews, and group discussions. Some of the findings were: (1) in general, students, school and college staff, and other key informants favored the increase in time for school placements; and (2) they recognized the benefits for the pilot students and from the longer period spent in the pilot school. Among the benefits were: pilot students seemed more confident and more integrated into the school staff than their counterparts in previous years; and the students enjoyed what they described as a realistic experience of teaching long enough in the same school to see the effects of instruction. Mentors experienced satisfaction in being more involved in students' development. Four appendixes provide names of the monitoring project advisory committee, the general context for the monitoring project, technical data, and a bibliography. (LL)
Vocational languages : foreign languages for vocational purposes in further and higher education by J Hall( Book )

2 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study of second language instruction for vocational purposes in Scotland is reported. It used case studies to investigate: (1) teaching approaches currently used; (2) assessment of foreign language skills for vocational purposes; (3) evidence of the effectiveness of different teaching approaches; and (4) approaches considered most effective by instructors and students. Nine cases were selected to reflect a range of vocational areas, a range of skills and certification levels, and a range of experience in modern language instruction. They include two courses specifically designed for individuals needing foreign language skills for their jobs, five that were language options in vocationally-oriented programs, and two courses designed for linguists wishing to develop language skills further in a vocationally-oriented context. The report contains six chapters: (1) a description of the study's design and summary of the case studies; (2) descriptive data on the students and staff, as well as administrative arrangements of the courses; (3) a summary of data gathered from 142 students responses to a questionnaire and 27 staff interviews; (4) student skill assessment methods used in customized, non-specialist, and degree/graduate courses; (5) observations on the relationship between foreign language teaching and vocational subject teaching (including curriculum development and articulation); and (6) conclusions drawn from the study. The student questionnaire is appended. (MSE)
