Science in the context of application ( )
13 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and German and held by 417 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
We increasingly view the world around us as a product of science and technology. Accordingly, we have begun to appreciate that science does not take its problems only from nature and then produces technological applications, but that the very problems of scientific research themselves are generated by science and technology. Simultaneously, problems like global warming, the toxicology of nanoparticles, or the use of renewable energies are constituted by many factors that interact with great complexity. Science in the context of application is challenged to gain new understanding and control of
Wittgenstein's Tractatus : an introduction by Alfred Nordmann ( Book )
12 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is one of the most important books of the twentieth century. It influenced philosophers and artists alike and continues to fascinate readers today. It offers rigorous arguments but clothes them in enigmatic pronouncements. Wittgenstein himself said that his book is "strictly philosophical and simultaneously literary, and yet there is no blathering in it." This introduction considers both the philosophical and the literary aspects of the Tractatus and shows how they are related. It also shows how the work fits into Wittgenstein's philosophical development and the tradition of analytic philosophy, arguing strongly for the vigor and significance of that tradition."--BOOK JACKET
Heinrich Hertz : classical physicist, modern philosopher by Davis Baird ( Book )
10 editions published between 1997 and 2011 in English and held by 248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This first major collection of essays devoted to Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894) brings together an international group of physicists, philosophers, and historians of science. It includes investigations of Hertz's background, his theoretical and experimental contributions, his philosophy of science, and his influence on science and philosophy in the twentieth century. Its central focus is Hertz's Principles of Mechanics of 1894 which develops the methodological intuitions that also informed his earlier discovery of electromagnetic wave radiation (so-called radio waves). Though his proposed reform of mechanics was not adopted, the book proved influential on physicists like Einstein, Schrödinger, Bohr, and Heisenberg, and on philosophers like Cassirer, Schlick, and Wittgenstein. It can be regarded as an ancestor of Thomas Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions, it anticipated current discussions on the role of models in science, and it represents an important chapter in the history of conventionalism. Audience: Philosophers of science, historians of science, Wittgenstein scholars, historians and philosophers of technology, physicists, electrical engineers, and mathematicians
Ludwig Wittgenstein : public and private occasions by Ludwig Wittgenstein ( Book )
7 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the safety of his manuscripts, Ludwig Wittgenstein was free to endlessly revise, rework and reframe his philosophical thoughts. Thus his published work yields a glimpse of just a small portion of Wittgenstein's philosophical thought; the portion that eventually appeared in print. Yet for Wittgenstein, philosophy was an on-going activity, a process. Only in his dialogue with the philosophical community and in his private moments does Wittgenstein's philosophical practice fully come to light. Those public and private occasions are collected here
Science transformed? : debating claims of an epochal break by Alfred Nordmann ( Book )
7 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Advancements in computing, instrumentation, robotics, digital imaging, and simulation modeling are changing science into a technology-driven institution. The pragmatic interests of government, industry, and society increasingly exert their influence over science, raising questions of values and objectivity. These and other profound changes in the world of science have led many to speculate that we are in the midst of an epochal break in scientific history. This edited volume presents an in-depth examination of these issues from philosophical, historical, social, and cultural perspectives. It presents arguments both for and against the epochal break thesis in light of historical antecedents, offering an important occasion for philosophical analysis of the epistemic, institutional and moral questions affecting current and future scientific pursuits.
