Winter soldier : an oral history of the Vietnam veterans against the war by Richard Stacewicz( Book )

4 editions published between 1997 and 2008 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The young men who went off to Vietnam and returned home to protest against the war did so because they believed that the military and the war undermined the very democratic institutions they had been raised to respect and to protect. Although they only used the spoken word to convey their opposition to the war, they were attacked by various governmental agencies which attempted to infiltrate and destroy the organization. Despite these attacks, VVAW members maintained their allegiance to democracy and nonviolence, played the leading role in gaining recognition for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and revealed the effects of Agent Orange exposure on Vietnam veterans when those who had sent them to war shunned them. They were the true heroes of that conflict not because they fought in Vietnam, but because they used the knowledge they had gained to fight for democracy at home
