Im Gegensatz zu Deutschland waren die österreichischen Freimaurer der Zwischenkriegszeit mehrheitlich jüdischer Herkunft und proeuropäisch orientiert. Unmittelbar nach dem "Anschluss" 1938 inhaftierte die SS führende Freimaurer und nötigte sie zur Übergabe des Logenbesitzes. Nichtjüdischen Mitgliedern bot das NS-Regime die Möglichkeit zur Anpassung, es gab aber auch Einzelfälle von aktivem Widerstand. Zum Verräter mutierte Kurt Reichl, der als Informant für den Ständestaat und danach für das NS-Regime arbeitete. Im Exil entstanden Logen nach österreichischem Vorbild in New York und Buenos Aires, in London und Sidney wurde dies verhindert, in Jerusalem und Tel Aviv schlossen sich die Entkommenen deutschen Logen an. Dank amerikanischer Hilfe gelang bereits 1945 die Neugründung der Großloge in Wien
