Over the last two and a half decades, the discovery of more than 1800 exoplanets has been a major breakthrough in our understanding of planetary systems. To shed light on the formation and evolution processes of such systems, I have chosen an observational approach based on the study of debris discs. These circumstellar discs are composed of dust particles constantly generated by collisions of small rocky bodies called planetesimals, orbiting a main-sequence star. The stellar light they scatter can be studied from the Earth and reveal a wealth of information on the architecture of the system. These observations are challenging because of the high contrast and the small angular separation between the disc and the star. The recent developments of new high-contrast instruments with extreme adaptive optic systems are therefore bringing new expectations for the study of these systems and set the framework of this PhD thesis. My work aims at characterising debris discs thanks to two instruments installed on the Very Large Telescope: NaCo and SPHERE (Spectro Polarimetric High contrast Exoplanet REsearch). NaCo has been in operation for more than a decade and has undergone many improvements. SPHERE has been designed and assembled in the same period, was intensively tested in laboratory in 2013, and is currently being commissioned on the telescope. The innovative approach of this PhD work is to combine the study of debris discs with strong instrumental expertise to get the best science results from the observations. The first part of the study aims at developing innovative data reduction techniques adapted to the observations of discs in scattered light and to the behaviour of the instrument. I quantify in particular the performances, advantages, and biases of the angular, polarimetric and reference-star differential imaging technique. In a next step, I apply those techniques to characterise two prototypes of debris discs, around the stars beta Pictoris and HR 4796A. A detailed analysis of the morphology is carried out, which reveals new asymmetries interpreted in terms of gravitational perturbers or of dust scattering properties. Lastly, I detail the expected and measured performances of SPHERE, from simulations, laboratory and on-sky measurements. A comparison with NaCo reveals the assets of SPHERE and I conclude with the scientific questions SPHERE will be able to answer with new debris disc observations

Il existe peu de grands téléscopes et le temps d'observation est une ressource précieuse sujette à une forte pression de la part d'une communauté concurrentielle. En outre, un nombre croissant de projets astronomiques nécessitent l'observation d'un grand nombre d'objets célestes pendant des runs discontinus répartis sur plusieurs mois ou années. Cette thèse est le fruit d'une collaboration entre des chercheurs en recherche opérationnelle du laboration G-SCOP et des astrophysiciens de l'unité de recherche IPAG. Son but était d'optimiser l'ordonnancement d'observations d'étoiles sur les téléscopes, en particulier, sur le Très Grand Télescope. Le premier chapitre contient une étude théorique de la complexité de plusieurs variantes de problèmes d'ordonnancement de maximization de profits dépendants du temps d'exécution. Ces problèmes apparaissent entre autres comme sous-problèmes du problème réel d'ordonnancement d'observations d'étoiles étudié dans le deuxième chapitre, pour lequel nous avons développé une recherche locale à voisinage large rapide et efficace. Le troisième chapitre ne concerne pas le problème d'ordonnancement d'observations d'étoiles. Il décrit l'algorithme de recherche arborescente que nous avons développé pour le problème de découpe de verre posé par l'entreprise Saint-Gobain pour le challenge ROADEF/EURO 2018

In the frame of the search for extrasolar planets, this thesis innovates and focuses on the search for extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs around A and F dwarf stars, hotter than these stars. I developped a new method for radial velocity measurements, that I tested and applied in the frame of a survey with the spectrographs ELODIE and HARPS, which lead at the moment to the detection of two planets and one brown dwarf, and to numerous candidates. I also developped diagnostics of the presence of pulsations and activity modifiyng the stellar surface and the radial velocities measured. Besides, I also performed this search with another method, the direct imaging at high angular resolution, complementary to the radial velocity method, using the instruments PUEO and NACO. The candidate companions detected have to be confirmed. This search will allow to characterize planets and brown dwarfs around A and F-type stars, and the impact of the stellar mass ont the formation processes

How giant exoplanet form, evolve and are made of is one of the biggest challenge of modernastronomy. They play an important role as they carry most of the planetary systemmasses. Therefore, they strongly impact their dynamics and the fate of these systems tohost life. My PhD thesis falls within an observational approach that is mandatory to bringconstraints on the diversity of planetary systems.I got my first results from a three-year survey, with NaCo at VLT. My observations ofHD142527 excluded the presence of massive giants planets to explain the structures of thistransitional disk and might favor a light multiple system. I also detected a giant planetaround HD95086 and I showed that it has particular atmospheric properties. Finally, Icarried out a statistical analysis of the whole survey to show that giant planets on wideorbitsare rare (10 - 20 %) and could not be formed via direct collapse of unstable disks.I dedicated the last part of my work to investigate the spectral simultaneous differentialimaging mode. I pointed out the biases associated to the reduction of these data andshowed that evolutionary models have to be used to analyze them. This study might helpto exploit the full potential of SPHERE/IRDIS data

The search for exoplanets has reached a decisive moment. On the one hand, our knowledge of giant gaseous planets has significantly developed, and the aim of the research is now to characterize their physical properties and to better understand the formation and evolution processes. On the other hand, the instrumental precision and stability have reached a level that makes it technically possible to detect telluric planets in the habitable zone of their host star. However, the signal alterations induced by the star itself definitely challenge this breakthrough. My PhD stands at the crossroads of these problems. It consisted first in the analysis of two radial velocity surveys dedicated to stars somewhat exotic to exoplanet searches: the massive AF dwarf stars. This work has led to the first characterization of the giant planet population found around these stars and has showed that the planetary migration mechanisms were at least partially inhibited around these stars compared to FGKM stars. I then made the observations and the first analysis of two radial velocity surveys dedicated to the search for giant planets around young, nearby stars. Young stars are the only sources for which a full exploration of the giant planets at all separations can be reached, through the combination of radial velocities techniques and direct imaging. Such a combination will allow to test uniquely the planetary formation and evolution processes. The first results of these surveys show an absence of giant planets at very short separations (Hot Jupiters) around our targets. Another interesting result is the detection of an eccentric spectroscopic binary at the center of a planetary system imaged at a wide separation. To complete this observational approach and better estimate the detectability of Earth-like planets, I calibrated and characterized a fully parameterized model of the activity pattern of a Sun-like star and its impact on the radial velocities. I first calibrated it by comparing it to the results obtained with observations of the solar active structures, and then characterized the impact of stellar inclination on the activity-induced signal. Such a fully parameterized model is potentially adaptable to different types of stars and of activity and would thus allow to characterize the expected radial velocity jitter for each tested case, and then allow both to determine which types of stars and of activity patterns are the most favorable for detecting Earth-like planets in the habitable zone. While investigating these three seemingly different but complementary topics, I found that they shared a basic feature, namely the importance of the stars themselves and of stellar physics in exoplanet searches

Several decades after the discovery of the first debris disks and exoplanets, lots of questions remain regarding the mechanisms of formation and evolution of planetary systems. The recent progress of high-resolution high-contrast direct imaging, illustrated by the instruments VLT/SPHERE and Gemini/GPI, enables to unveil the outer architecture (> 5 au) of young (< 200 Myr) extrasolar systems when the dynamical interactions are frequent. This work sheds light on the origin and dynamical evolution mechanisms of planetary systems through the detailed study of key systems resolved with SPHERE and through the developing of dedicated tools.The first part of this manuscript tackles the subject of N-body simulations. Numerous algorithms have been proposed and implemented, with different compromises on their speed, accuracy, and versatility. Among these algorithms, SWIFT HJS allows us to model for secular times architectures that are very different from our Solar System. It is thus an essential tool to the study of planetary to stellar companions with non-negligible mass ratio, which are often encountered with direct imaging. Within my Ph.D., the functionalities of the algorithm were extended to handle hierarchy changes and close encounters, which can play an important part in the dynamical history of planetary systems. The code was used to study in detail the mysterious system HD 106906, in particular, the interactions between its main components (binary star, planet, debris disk).In the second part of the manuscript, I introduce the subject of orbital fitting. The observation of a system at different epochs allows theoretically to retrieve the characteristics of the orbits. However, the problem is often complex and degenerate, in particular when the observations span a small fraction of the orbital period. The widely used MCMC statistical approach enables to get robust estimates in most of the cases. These estimates are then used to study the history and stability of the system, and the interactions between the orbits and their environment, notably the disks. This role of orbital fitting is here illustrated by the study of several benchmark systems imaged with SPHERE
