"After his deconstructive beginnings in the eighties and nineties, Frank Gehry increasingly practised a very plastic form of architecture. His expressively sculptural cultural buildings, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, his project for the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and above all the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (see Opus 32), have shaped the architectural awareness of our period and provided exemplary artistic alternatives to the architectural canon of Modernism."--BOOK JACKET

Erick van Egeraat, (EEA) Erick van Egeraat associated architects : 10 years, realised works by Erick van Egeraat( Book )

7 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is a celebration of the work of Erick van Egeraat and his firm EEA, over the past 10 years. It includes commercial and residential developments, public and educational buildings, interior design projects, exhibition and product design, presented in the eclectic style that characterises the work of this major force in contemporary European architecture. Often controversial, Erick van Egeraat's work challenges established notions of architectural process, but always with an emphasis on practicality, albeit with a high proportion of 'art', in order to produce an innovative but attractive architecture. Much more than just a digest of completed works, this book includes Erick van Egeraat's own commentary on each project, adding a rare and valuable insight into the processes that engender his work."--Jacket
Bolles + Wilson : Nieuwe Luxor Theater, Rotterdam by Lars Lerup( Book )

4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This building, opened by the Dutch Queen in April 2001, is a theatre for musicals, concerts and opera with a long tradition deeply rooted in Dutch popular culture. The Bolles + Wilson design, which won the original competition against such Dutch luminaries like Koolhaas, Hertzberger or Christianse, responds to the multiple orientation of the harbourside site, radically reconstituting theatre plan form and organisational logistics, with back-stage facilities at the front of the building and delivery trucks routed through to a first-floor stage. A wrap-round red facade encloses visually dramatic foyer sequences like a stage curtain; at the same time it presents the Luxor as a leading actor in Rotterdam's new docklands district of Kop van Zuid on a wider urban stage. This>>house of illusion<<is a full-scale camera obscura with spectacular bridge, city and harbour panoramas choreographed into the unfolding interior landscape." "The Luxor is a significant milestone in the oeuvre of Bolles + Wilson. As a major public building it pursues themes first tested in the 1993 new city library in Munster: a characteristic plan form, an intervention that redefines its context, and a synthesis of the abstract with a spatial warmth, an ambience that communicates directly and subliminally to a wide audience base. The architecture of this German/Australian duo does not fit easily into conventional architectural genres. Smallness, intimacy, and precise details characterise their work, just like an increasing number of urban interventions that have made a major impact on cities like Hengelo, The Hague or Magdeburg." "The design of the Luxor Theatre, the process of its realisation, Bolles + Wilson's surrounding urban fields and, most importantly, the internal life in the building engendered by the architecture are fully presented in this book."--Jacket

Coop Himmelb(l)au, Musée des Confluences, Lyon by Frank Werner( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in French and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the end of the 20th century, an unprecedented number of remarkable museums have been built. None have had bigger worldwide implications than Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Until, that is, the new Musée des Confluences in Lyon was opened to the public, in late 2014. It was created by Wolf D. Prix of the Coop Himmelb(l)au team, which was founded in the 1970s. Many avantgarde groups from those wild years such as Archigram, Superstudio, Archizoom, Haus-Rucker- Co, and the Japanese Metabolists are now consigned to the past, but the Coop Himmelb(l)au architecture firm, whose special aspiration was always to bring into the world buildings that overcome the pull of the earth buildings to float on the horizon like clouds is more in demand than ever. The finest demonstration of this endeavour to date can now be admired in Lyon. Functioning as a museum of human history, this impressive concrete, metal and glass colossus truly does appear to float above the peninsula at the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône. Like the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, this new building, so impossible to overlook, is an inspiration for the revitalisation of disrupted urban areas and the valorisation of derelict industrial areas within the city precincts, but also far beyond Lyon. This 'Opus' volume deals with the origins, construction, function and formal appearance of the Musée des Confluences, and also offers a preliminary theoretically based evaluation of the architecture of the building
