The soldier has fourteen days' leave and is heading home on foot. Somewhere between Chur and Wallenstein, as he rests on the bank of a stream and plays his fiddle, the Devil appears dressed as an old man. The two of them strike a deal, Satan will get the fiddle and in return the soldier will receive a book to which the devil ascribes magic powers promising great riches. The soldier agrees to be the guest of the devil for three days, during which time he will teach him to play the fiddle
