Constitution day : marriage as a civil right
(

)
1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 1 library worldwide Introduction by Firmin DeBrabander, Constitution Day organizer and chair of the Humanistic Studies Department. The panel, moderated by WYPR's The Signal producer Aaron Henkin, includes internationally syndicated columnist Dan Savage; Baltimore-born and nationally acclaimed performance artist Sharon Hayes; and Dr. Kendall Thomas, a law professor at Columbia University who writes and lectures on constitutional law, civil rights, race and sexuality. The discussion begins with a speech from each panel member. Kendall Thomas discusses gay marriage as an outlet for a larger debate on the rise of non-traditional marriages and kinship bonds in America, the constitutional legality of gay marriage and the interaction between political debate and religious institutions. Sharon Hayes discusses the artist's role as an instigator for social change showing images and video of her 2008 public performance "Revolutionary Love: I Am Your Worst Fear, I Am Your Best Fantasy". Dan Savage speaks about his personal experiences with marriage, being an adoptive father and the redefinition of marriage over the last century. Following the speeches is a panel discussion about morality, the separation of church and state, cultural shifts in America, race and the gay rights movement, priviledge and radicalism within the gay rights movement and equality across social differences. The event ends with a question and answer session. Consitution day is sponsored by Maryland Institute College of Art in conjunction with the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland.
