Lifelike by Siri Engberg( Book )

7 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 235 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Is it real? Lifelike invites a close examination of art since the late 1960s based on commonplace objects and situations that are startlingly realistic, often playful and sometimes surreal--works that investigate the quieter side of the quotidian. While artists such as Vija Celmins, Rudolf Stingel and Paul Sietsema employ illusionistic painting and drawing, others' use of materials is surprising--Thomas Demand's video of what appears to be a rainstorm is made from animated candy wrappers; Susan Collis' sculpture of construction debris is fashioned from exotic hardwoods, mother of pearl and silver. What binds these artists together is their rejection of the easy route technology might offer in favor of labor-intensive fabrication. Featuring painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, video and installations by more than 40 artists, Lifelike is the first publication to address the recent history of artists using these strategies across media
The Light club : on Paul Scheerbart's The light club of Batavia by Josiah McElheny( Book )

8 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Paul Scheerbart (18631915) was a visionary German novelist, theorist, poet, and artist who made a lasting impression on such icons of modernism as Walter Benjamin, Bruno Taut, and Walter Gropius. Fascinated with the potential of glass architecture, Scheerbart's satirical fantasies envisioned an electrified future, a world composed entirely of crystalline, colored glass. In 1912, Scheerbart published The Light Club of Batavia, a Novelle about the formation of a club dedicated to building a spa for bathingnot in water, but in lightat the bottom of an abandoned mineshaft. Freak art scrapbook : Chicago's Armory show in print, 1913( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1913, the year that the Armory Show hit Chicago, an anonymous Chicago artist gathered every newspaper clipping from the infamous Art Institute exhibition into a sensational handmade document. Freak Art Scrapbook presents this folk ledger of the key showcase of American and European art in the early 20th century, a collection of witty and vitriolic snippets, much of it dripping with satire as nearly an entire city took to lampooning modern art. Lovingly reproduced in all its bilious, acidic yellow, sporting pre-jazz cartoons that snicker repeatedly at Duchamp's "Nude Descending A Staircase," the scrapbook in fact turns out to be a complex and many layered artifact, not only a register of the Midwestern response to modernism, but a fascinating glimpse of the central arguments about populism and the vanguard."--Publisher's website

The artists in Power challenge authority, oppression, and control. Each artist humanizes difficult issues by acting as a witness to violence, working to heal communities, or achieving a balance between constructive and destructive energies. Whether critical, irreverent, or introspective, the artists in Memory delve into personal memory and the past, transforming them in their work. The artists wrestle with complex topics such as the veracity of history, the nature of interpretation, subjective versus objective truth, and the ways in which objects and images from the past embody cultural memory

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

“I’d like to start with a phrase I‘ve heard you use: ’quixotic confluences’—things that come together in totally unforeseen ways that continue to resonate. You told me that sometimes you begin a work by responding to a story or event, and that during the course of this pursuit, something else tends to come up which overlays the piece.”

The artists in Structures create systems, shift contexts, and engage with perception, utilizing unconventional devices such as exhibitions within exhibitions and dramatic shifts in scale between microcosm and macrocosm. The artists in Play improvise games, draw inspiration from dance and music, and employ color, pattern, and movement to elicit delight. Indulging in process, these artists transform naive impulses into critical statements about the nature of identity, creative expression, and pleasure

Using glass to explore a provocative range of artistic and intellectual concerns, Josiah McElheny (*1966 in Boston) produces dazzling fabricated objects that address such subjects as the nature of visual perception, the narratives of modernism, and the origin of the universe. Since 2007 he has produced a series of sculptures and a film inspired by 'The Light Club of Batavia', a 1912 text by German Expressionist writer Paul Scheerbart. This publication focuses on McElheny's 'Light Club' works, which investigate the role of glass in utopian ideas about modernist architecture., Exhibition: Wexner Center for the Arts, The Ohio State University, Columbus, USA (26.1.-7.5.2013)
