Alexander Rodchenko : spatial constructions = Raumkonstruktionen by Aleksandr Mikhaĭlovich Rodchenko( Book )

2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As spokesman of the Inkhuk group, which included Vladimir Tatlin as a leading member, Alexander Rodchenko was a decisive factor in the development of abstract art with his paintings, sculptures and architectural designs. This monograph focuses on Rodchenko's sculptures and presents a large number of works created by the Russian Constructivist. These can be loosely divided into three groups, beginning with the abstract sculptures dating from the year 1918, in which the artist renders the geometric surfaces of his pictures "spatially," assembling two-dimensional material, cardboard or plywood. Subsequently, works that are intended to be freely suspended within a given space form a second series of constructions: These light, perforated interlacings, consisting of similar geometrical contours, were flexible, kinetic sculptures, also viewed as the first mobiles. A third group represents Rodchenko's constructions of standard type squared timber produced in around 1920, which were never shown during his lifetime. These sculptures, constructed of raw wooden modules and reminiscent of Art Brut, demonstrate the universal validity of the principles governing the organization of forms, upon which the constructivists based the composition of their paintings

Medardo Rosso by Medardo Rosso( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 88 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With his figures, Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso succeeded in contributing decisively to the development of modern sculpture. The artist's points of focus were the moment when the sculpture was perceived and the fusion of the figure with its surroundings. He worked almost exclusively on portrait heads; wax became a substitute for bronze, allowing him to work the surface of the sculpture to its finest perfection and to use different hues, adequate expression for the fleetingness of the apparition. And they are fleeting--one hardly knows if the portrayed faces are receding from the sculpture's surface or pushing up against it. In Paris, where Rosso spent the greater part of his life, he found understanding friends in Edgar Degas and the collector Henri Rouart, while friendship with Rodin miscarried because of the rivalry between the two sculptors. At around the turn of the century, Rosso's sculptures could be seen at many large European exhibitions; the Futurists would soon hold him up as a model. This publication, a scholarly survey of the artist's work, makes clear that although Rosso limited himself to very few motifs, their many different versions translated into independent works

Lynn Hershman Leeson : civic radar by Lynn Hershman-Leeson( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 83 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"First comprehensive monograph, compiled in close collaboration with the artist. Lynn Hershman Leeson is among the first and most influential of media artists. During the past five decades she has achieved pioneering work in the fields of photography, video, film, performance, installation and interactive and net-based media art. The major themes of Hershman Leeson are the construction of identity, monitoring and control, and life in the era of genetic engineering. Her most influential performance work is Roberta Breitmore (1973-78) - the fictional character that she, then three subsequent female personas, enacted in real time and space, using artifacts of the time. In her most recent works, Lynn Hershman Leeson includes web applications, mass communication media such as smart-phones, as well as the latest scientific developments in the field of genetics and regenerative medicine including 3D bioprinters that create human body parts." from publisher's website

Paul Thek : from cross to crib by Paul Thek( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is devoted to a little-known temporary artwork: in the winter of 1973/74 Paul Thek was a guest of the Lehmbruck-Museum in Duisburg. His expansive environment 'Ark, Pyramid - Christmas' ('The Manger') filled a whole room. It was the further development of his installation realized at the documenta 5 in Kassel (1972). This exhibition, organised by the director of the museum at the time, Siegfried Salzmann (1985-1993), was the fourth in Thek's series of atmospheric, large-scale projects in Europe, which engaged with individualised religious symbols. The festive period provided Thek with the occasion to present, for the first time, a self-written theatre piece in the form of a nativity play featuring children from Duisburg. A great quantity of original material and documents have been discovered in the museum's repository and enable a reconstruction of the exhibition in this book. Exhibition: Lehmbruck Museum Duisburg, Germany (27.04-28.07.2012)
