This report examines the British long-haul pleasure travel market from the travel industry perspective, studying the role, structure, and perceptions of the industry in the United Kingdom (tour operators, travel agencies, airlines) as determined from a survey of industry representatives and in-depth interviews with key players. An overview of the British travel market includes a historical background on the development of the country's outbound travel market, data on current travel patterns and trends, assessment of future growth of British travel, and information on the country's travel trade. This is followed by discussion of the trade's awareness and perceptions of North American travel products and the relative strengths and weaknesses of the United States, Canada, and Mexico as vacation destinations. The final chapters addresses the marketing of North American destinations to British travellers and the role of North American tourism marketers in the United Kingdom. Marketing recommendations are made in the context of the travel product life cycle. The appendix includes a copy of the travel industry survey questionnaire

This publication was commissioned by the Canadian Tourism Commission, following a pilot project to provide quarterly updates for the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA 1988). The indicators are for the purpose of monitoring supply, demand and employment for tourism in Canada on a timely basis. The quarterly tables are derived using series from the National Income and Expenditures Accounts (IEA) and series from various industry surveys. They will be available about two weeks following the release of the quarterly IEA. Tables providing actual data, and percentage changes, for seasonally adjusted current and constant price estimates will be included
