This report examines the German long-haul pleasure travel market from the travel industry perspective, studying the role, structure, and perceptions of the industry in Germany (tour operators, travel agencies, airlines) as determined from a survey of industry representatives and in-depth interviews with key players. An overview of the German travel market includes a historical background on the development of the country's outbound travel market, data on current travel patterns and trends, assessment of future growth of German travel, and information on the country's travel trade. This is followed by discussion of the trade's awareness and perceptions of North American travel products and the relative strengths and weaknesses of the United States, Canada, and Mexico as vacation destinations. The final chapter addresses the marketing of North American destinations to German travellers and makes recommendations in the context of the travel product life cycle. This study represents the Commission's first major initiative to examine in detail the motivations, attitudes, and perceptions of Canadians about tourism, travel opportunities, and destinations. Study results are based on a combination of telephone and in-person interviews with over 3,300 Canadians in all regions of the country. The overall purpose of the study is to determine how best to market Canadian destinations and products to Canadians and examine possibilities for import substitution in order to reduce Canada's international travel deficit. The study first presents an overview of the domestic travel market, including size, trip characteristics, travel motivations and attitudes, and future travel intentions. Chapter 3 focuses on the issue of brand loyalty and the potential for import substitution. This is followed by a chapter on destination marketing, examining destination preferences and perceptions of Canada and the United States as travel destinations. Chapter 5 summarizes the philosophy and motivational segments of the domestic market and explores specific opportunities for import substitution among these segments

This publication was commissioned by the Canadian Tourism Commission, following a pilot project to provide quarterly updates for the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA 1988). The indicators are for the purpose of monitoring supply, demand and employment for tourism in Canada on a timely basis. The quarterly tables are derived using series from the National Income and Expenditures Accounts (IEA) and series from various industry surveys. They will be available about two weeks following the release of the quarterly IEA. Tables providing actual data, and percentage changes, for seasonally adjusted current and constant price estimates will be included
