Knights on the frontier : the Moorish guard of the Kings of Castile (1410-1467) by Ana Echevarria( )

16 editions published between 2006 and 2013 in Spanish and English and held by 488 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The kings of Castile maintained a personal cavalry guard through much of the fifteenth century, consisting of practicing Muslims and converts to Christianity. This privileged Muslim elite provides an interesting case-study to propose new theories about voluntary conversion from Christianity to Islam in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the ways of assimilation of such a group into the local and courtly environments where they lived thereafter. Other subjects involved are the transformation of royal armies from feudal companies to regimented, professional forces including a well-trained cavalry, which in Castile was formed partly by these knights. Their descendants had to endure the changing policies conveyed by Isabel and Fernando, which increased discriminatory habits towards converts in Castilian society."--Jacket
The fortress of faith : the attitude towards Muslims in fifteenth century Spain by Ana Echevarria( Book )

14 editions published between 1995 and 1999 in English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume deals with the creation of a new image of Islam in the Iberian Peninsula in the fifteenth century. It uses as point of departure several treatises on Islam written around 1450. The interpretation of these sources shows a new view of the interaction between Islam and Christianity, which favoured the conquest of Granada - the last piece of land under Muslim power in the Peninsula - and the obstruction of Turkish advance in Europe
Law and religious minorities in medieval societies : between theory and praxis = De la teoría legal a la práctica en el derecho de las minoría religiosas en la edad media by Ana Echevarria( Book )

7 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Muslim law developed a clear legal cadre for dhimmīs, inferior but protected non-Muslim communities (in particular Jews and Christians) and Roman Canon law decreed a similar status for Jewish and Muslim communities in Europe. Yet the theoretical hierarchies between faithful and infidel were constantly brought into question in the daily interactions between men and women of different faiths in streets, markets, bath-houses, law courts, etc. The twelve essays in this volume explore these tensions and attempts to resolve them. These contributions show that law was used to try to erect boundaries between communities in order to regulate or restrict interaction between the faithful and the non-faithful--and at the same time how these boundaries were repeatedly transgressed and negotiated. These essays explore also the possibilities and the limits of the use of legal sources for the social historian"--Back cover

Religious boundaries for sex, gender, and corporeality( Book )

5 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The ambiguity concerning the interpretation of the `physical body' in religious thought is not peculiar to any given religion, but is discernible in the scriptures, practices, and disciplines in most of the world's major religious traditions. This book seeks to address the nuances of difference within and between religious traditions in the treatment and understanding of what constitutes the body as a carrier of religious meaning and/or vindication of doctrine. Bringing together an international team of contributors from different disciplines, this collection addresses the intersection of religion, gender, corporeality and/or sexuality in various Western and Eastern cultures. The book analyses instances when religious meaning is attributed to the human body's physicality and its mechanics in contrast to imagined or metaphorical bodies. In other cases, it is shown that the body may function either as a vehicle or a hindrance for mystical knowledge. The chapters are arranged chronologically and across religious orientations, to offer a differentiated view on the body from a global perspective. This collection is an exciting exploration of religion and the human body. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars in religious studies, theology, Islamic studies, South Asian studies, history of religions and gender studies

Pouvoir politique et conversion religieuse. 1. Normes et mots \ by Cyrille Aillet( )

1 edition published in 2017 in French and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
