Provides a blueprint for bringing us all up to speed on the role of technology in our society, including understanding such distinctions as technology versus science and technological literacy versus technical competence. Owner-authorized handguns : a workshop summary by STEERING COMMITTEE FOR NAE WORKSHOP ON USER AUTHORIZED HANDGUNS( )

8 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 1,606 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The feasibility and potential impact of so-called smart handguns has generated considerable public interest and debate. This report summarizes a June 2002 workshop at the National Academy of Engineering that examined three related issues: the state of technology for owner-authorized handguns; the role of product liability in the development and marketing of such firearms; and the potential impact of these smart guns on health and crime. Smart-gun technology has the potential to prevent unintended or undesirable uses of handguns, such as accidental shootings; the shooting of police officers by assailants using the officers' own weapons; suicides; homicides with stolen handguns; and other gun-related crimes. However, information presented at the workshop suggests that considerably more research is needed to bring a reliable and commercially viable product to the marketplace. The report also notes that the impact of smart-guns will be influenced by legal issues, human behavior, economic conditions, and other factors

The children's vaccine initiative : continuing activities ; a summary of two workshops held September 12-13 and October 25-26, 1994( )

8 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 1,249 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In March 1994, the newly formed IOM Steering Committee on the Children's Vaccine Initiative: Continuing Activities met for the first time. The panel was charged with overseeing the planning of these two workshops. With input from USAID, the committee decided that the first session should address impediments to the introduction in the developing world of new vaccines against acute respiratory infections (ARI). The USAID hoped the workshop would help inform its own program development as well as the activities of other players in this arena. To ensure that the broadest range of issues was considered, the committee decided the workshop should look at existing products that are at different stages of development. With this in mind, the panel selected three types of vaccines for discussion. Conjugate vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib) represented a vaccine that is already widely used. Conjugate vaccine against Streptococcus pneumoniae was illustrative of a product still undergoing extensive development. The committee also chose to include conjugate vaccine against Neisseria meningitides. For the second workshop; the panel hoped the meeting would stimulate additional useful dialogue about the CVI between the public and private sectors. In particular, the committee wanted to focus attention on how the U.S vaccine and biotechnology industries may best contribute to meeting the needs of developing countries for new and improved vaccines. To increase the likelihood that participants would speak freely, the meeting was by invitation only and was held at a secluded site in rural Virginia. Because of the somewhat sensitive nature of the topics discussed, this Summary, unlike the one from the September workshop, does not identify participants by name
STEM integration in K-12 education : status, prospects, and an agenda for research by National Academy of Engineering( )

6 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 1,131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This report is the final product of a two-year study. ... The committee's charge was to develop a research agenda for determining the approaches and conditions most likely to lead to positive outcomes of integrated STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) education at the K-12 level in the United States. In fulfilling that charge, the committee identified and characterized existing approaches to integrated STEM education, in both formal and after-school and informal settings. It also reviewed the evidence for the impact of integrated approaches on various parameters of interest, such as greater student awareness, interest, motivation, and achievement in STEM subjects; improved college-readiness skills; and boosts in the number and quality of students who may consider a career in a STEM-related field"--Preface
