Worlds of journalism : journalistic cultures around the globe( )

9 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 919 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"How do journalists around the world view their own function and role in society? Based on a landmark study that has collected data from more than 25,000 journalists in 66 countries between 2012 and 2015, Worlds of Journalism examines the different ways journalists conceive of their responsibilities, their relationship to society and government, and the work they do. The authors conclude that there is no one conception of journalism and instead advance a global classification of journalistic cultures: the corporate libertarian model (e.g., U.S. and Australia); the public-service remit model (e.g., parts of continental Europe); the social interventionist model (e.g., parts of the Islamic World); the developmental faciliative model (e.g., parts of Africa and Asia); and the coercive heteronomy model (e.g., China and Russia). The book is organized around a series of key questions regarding journalists' autonomy, influences on their practice, journalism's role in society, journalists' trust in social institutions, and their perceptions about the ongoing transformation of journalism. Worlds of Journalism reveals how perceptions of journalism are created and re-created by journalists and how the practice of journalism is affected by different political, social, and economic institutions. The authors challenge essentialist ideas about journalism and provide an understanding of the diversity of worldviews and orientations of journalists in terms of roles, ethics, and influences"--

Press Responsibility Based on Professionalism A Typology of Attributes by A. S De Beer( Book )

1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Arguing that professionalism constitutes a method according to which journalism is able to consolidate its position in society and gain the confidence of governments and the public, this paper discusses some theoretical parameters that can serve as a conceptual basis for journalistic professionalization. Noting that according to the sociology of occupations professionalism is not a singular concept, the paper posits a model of journalistic professionalization consisting of three dimensions: knowledge, orientation, and structure/organization. It then discusses briefly the knowledge and orientation dimensions and offers an indepth presentation of the structure/organization dimension. The paper concludes that it is essential that journalism should progress on all three dimensions toward a more complete form of professionalism. (FL)
Binary opposites : can South African journalists be both watchdogs and developmental journalists?( )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This article challenges the traditional role ascribed by liberal and developmental media theory that journalists should either be watchdogs or developmental journalists but not both at the same time. As part of the South African leg of the Worlds of Journalism (WJS) project this article argues that it is indeed possible that the media can fulfil both roles. Utilizing the WJS 2014 questionnaire and based on a provincial face-to-face (n=37) and a national electronic survey (n=371) the results from the WJS South African project show a potential new trend in the way South African journalists see their role. This article reports in the main on the background to the face-to-face survey, while utilizing data from the national survey reported on elsewhere. Data analysis showed when both roles were compared to one another it was apparent that the watchdog and developmental roles were statistically significantly related to one another
Out and into the World But What Kind of World Does South African News Media Present? by A. S De Beer( Book )

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For South African media and its audiences, as well as news researchers, the democratization developments in South Africa since April 1994 also offer new opportunities in the field of news flow studies. To answer the question "How are South African mass media portraying Africa and the rest of the world in the post-apartheid era through the process of international news coverage?", a study examined two newspapers, "The Star" and "Sunday Times," as well as the South African Broadcasting Corporation's main news broadcast. A content analysis was executed on all international news appearing in the 3 chosen media for the period 3-9 and 17-23 September 1995. The study is part of an international news flow research project, and the project periods were chosen to coincide with those of the international project. Preliminary results showed the following trends: (1) the media covered news topics in line with traditional Western news values--emphasis on sports and entertainment; (2) a majority of news stories were from South Africa, but a significant number of stories were datelined in Western countries; (3) international news sources were overwhelmingly Western; (4) the lack of emphasis on disruptive news from Africa offers a new way to look at the continent; and (5) results suggest that "news mapping" within the South African media could lead to a better understanding of the way international news choices are made, and how people in a changing society get to know the world around them.
