From X-rays to DNA : how engineering drives biology by W. David Lee( )

10 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 1,611 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Engineering has been an essential collaborator in biological research and breakthroughs in biology are often enabled by technological advances. Decoding the double helix structure of DNA, for example, only became possible after significant advances in such technologies as X-ray diffraction and gel electrophoresis. Diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis improved as new technologies--including the stethoscope, the microscope, and the X-ray--developed. These engineering breakthroughs take place away from the biology lab, and many years may elapse before the technology becomes available to biologists. In this book, David Lee argues for concurrent engineering--the convergence of engineering and biological research--as a means to accelerate the pace of biological discovery and its application to diagnosis and treatment. He presents extensive case studies and introduces a metric to measure the time between technological development and biological discovery. Investigating a series of major biological discoveries that range from pasteurization to electron microscopy, Lee finds that it took an average of forty years for the necessary technology to become available for laboratory use. Lee calls for new approaches to research and funding to encourage a tighter, more collaborative coupling of engineering and biology. Only then, he argues, will we see the rapid advances in the life sciences that are critically needed for life-saving diagnosis and treatment."--Publisher information

Specific topics covered include the role of leukotrienes and lipoxins in inflammation, the cytochrome P450 pathway, the genetics and genomics of bioactive lipids, lipid peroxidation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, isoprostanes, receptors and inhibitors, cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways and inhibitors, prostaglandin synthases and receptor signaling, phospholipases and inhibitors
Asthma and copd : basic mechanisms and clinical management by Peter J Barnes( )

3 editions published between 2002 and 2008 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Second Edition of Asthma and COPD: Basic Mechanisms and Clinical Management continues to provide a unique and authoritative comparison of asthma and COPD. Written and edited by the world's leading experts, it continues to be a comprehensive review of the most recent understanding of the basic mechanisms of both conditions, specifically comparing their etiology, pathogenesis, and treatments. * Each chapter considers Asthma and COPD in side-by-side contrast and comparison - not in isolation - in the context of mechanism, triggers, assessments, therapies, and clinical management. Presents the latest and most comprehensive understandings of the mechanisms of inflammation in both Asthma and COPD. Most extensive reference to primary literature on both Asthma and COPD in one source. Easy-to-read summaries of the latest advances alongside clear illustrations

Interaction between Lung Mechanics and Gas Exchange by Low Volume High Frequency Pulmonary Ventilation in Patients with Respiratory Failure( Book )

4 editions published between 1983 and 1985 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the tenure of this contract, research was conducted both in patient volunteers and in hardware models. The patient studies led to the realization that dynamic hyperinflation of the lungs could commonly occur during high frequency ventilation and physiological experiments were conducted to determine the mechanisms responsible for this. The modelling studies (at MIT) first established the nature of the pressure-flow relationships which existed during high-frequency ventilation in a rigid tube model with lung-like geometry. The link between pressure and flow and gas transport was then established by measuring, in a similar model, the transport coefficients under circumstances dynamically similar to high frequency ventilation. Finally, since the patient studies suggested that expiratory flow limitation may be of critical value in understanding the dynamic hyperinflation observed in patient studies, fluid dynamic modelling of flow limitation was performed in order to better understand the physical factors influencing dynamic airway collapse. In this report, we shall summarize the work completed in each area, the details of which may be found in the appropriate annual reports
