Transition aluminas, and especially the gamma type, are largely used as catalyst supports in refining and petrochemicals. Most studies focus on properties resulting from material texture and casting (specific surface, porous volume, pore shape and diameter). However, surface properties of alumina should be considered as well, as the catalytic activity is tightly related to the structure of exposed crystalline faces. As y alumina results from controlled thermal treatment of boehmite y-AlOOH by a topotactic transformation, the nature of exposed crystalline planes is related to the starting material. Therefore, the synthesis of the oxihydroxide gamma-A1OOH, and especially size and shape of these particles, is critical in determining the relevant surface properties. Unlike often aggregated alumina, boehmite nanoparticles can be observed by TEM. Analysis of these TEM images can be performed to esrimate the size of the boehmite nanoparticles. Information about morphology of the nanoparticles is obtained by the analysis of the covariance, modeling micrographs by a dilution model

De la maîtrise morphologique de nanoparticules de TiO2 au contrôle du frittage by Céline Perego( )

During this study, we have synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles by soft routes in aqueous media. Anatase, brookite and rutile have been obtained in pure phases, with well-defined size and morphology. Thermal treatments were conducted at temperatures ranging from 500 to 750°C to study particles sintering. We have observed the influence of initial morphology on particles sintering. We also have shown that the anatase → rutile and brookite → rutile phase transition and kinetic were modified by initial morpholgy of particules, but also by annealing gas atmosphere and by the presence of impurities on the particles. This last result was used in a second point to thermically stabilized anatase and brookite nanoparticles by lanthanum doping. Particles have been characterized by numerous techniques, such as high resolution transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analyses and differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray diffraction was widely used to characterize sizes, morphologies and phase transition during sintering
