While secretary for Stannard Dole, an unhappily married artist, Ethel wins his love quite innocently. Later Ethel falls in love with Ethan Bristol, a physician and Dole's friend. The shock of being told that Ethel prefers another man is too much for the artist, suffering from heart disease, and he dies. Dole's widow, Carrie, on learning of the relationship is determined to be avenged. After Ethel marries Bristol Carrie secures a job as housekeeper in the doctor's home. Carrie makes Ethel believe that her husband has fallen in love with his adopted daughter. Ethel confronts him and he convinces her of his innocence. Still seeking revenge, Carrie forges an entry in the artist's diary, which reveals and fabricates Ethel's relationship with the artist. Bristol denounces Ethel, she tries to commit suicide and then leaves. Carrie succeeds in wrecking the home temporarily; however, Bristol searches and finds his wife and they are reunited.
