The end of the "Asian model"?( )

19 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 1,700 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the economic crisis in Asia, which unfolded in recent years, the development 'model' on which the phenomenal earlier success of several countries in the region was built requires increasing scrutiny. This anthology questions the validity of the notion promoted by some observers and international financial organizations that there is a universally applicable model of industrialization common to Asian countries. A number of senior and highly regarded Asia specialists are taking a critical look at the various development experiences of several (and some often neglected) Asian countries and evaluate their experiences in a comparative perspective. Comparing the analyses of countries such as Mongolia, the Pacific Islands, or Sri Lanka with Singapore, South Korea and other countries of the region leads the editors of this volume to the conclusion that the fashionable talk about a 'model' is not justified and that the picture is much more complex."--Jacket

The West Indian Americans by Holger Henke( )

8 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,026 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The West Indian Americans captures the experiences of this diverse group of immigrants who have arrived in the United States since 1965. These English-speaking Caribbean immigrants have an increasing presence in this country, particularly in New York City. The differences between the various peoples of African, East Indian, or mixed ancestry, usually unacknowledged, are described here. Henke clearly relates who the groups are - from the Jamaicans to the Garifuna - why they left their homelands, how they have adapted and impacted this country, and the new challenges they face. Many notable West Indian Americans are profiled."--Jacket
Constructing vernacular culture in the trans-Caribbean( Book )

5 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Constructing Vernacular Culture in the Trans-Caribbean traces the contradictory cultural trajectories constructed and re-produced in the fluid diasporic spaces we call the Trans-Caribbean. Particular emphasis is placed on such cultural expressions that reflect or derive from the cultural vernacular and popular culture as it exists in these spaces. Its multidisciplinary approach and focus on different language areas in the Trans-Caribbean are of particular interest to scholars in cultural studies, migration, literary theory, and cultural criticism
Crossing over : comparing recent migration in the United States and Europe( Book )

11 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Despite growing cultural and economic homogenization across the globe, the visible presence of immigrant communities stands out in many of the world's metropolises. In almost all major cities, the cultural and physical presence of various ethnic or religious groups is evident. Yet, until now, the academic treatment of international migration has mostly been confined to limited case studies, single ethnic groups, or single locations. Crossing Over offers an alternative to this method, bringing together a diverse group of academics charged with submitting new research that juxtaposes experiences and draws on comparisons between aspects of migration in Europe and the United States. The essays focus on two main issues: security - heightened by recent terrorist activities - and the question of citizenship, identity, and host-guest interaction. The result is a collection of accessible research essays that shed light on both the similarities and differences that exist for immigrant groups across continents and cultures."--Jacket
