"An unvarnished account of his near-disastrous stay, in 1997, on Russia's creaky space station ... an engrossing report that NASA's publicity machine will bemoan." Booklist "[Linenger's] frank, personable prose shows readers what it's like to be an astronaut -or at least to be this particular astronaut, trying, along with his Russian companions, to live and work with good humor on an 11-year-old, half-broken, famously flammable space station as its air fills with antifreeze that is leaking out of shoddy cooling lines." Publishers Weekly "NASA astronaut Linenger spent five months aboard the Russian space station Mir, a spacecraft operating far beyond its design life. His personal account vividly captures the challenges and privation he endured both before and during his flight." Library Journal

Of all life on Earth, how come we're the only ones with the smarts to leave our planet? For nearly 3 billion years nothing had a brain. Even today, it is estimated over 99% of life doesn't need a brain to survive. So, what happened? What did our planet do to set in motion a chain of impossible and unlikely events that ultimately made us so much more intelligent than anything else?

Our rock is special - it's alive. Though the building blocks of life are common across the universe, life is rare. So what is it about planet Earth that sets it apart? This is the story of dynamic forces and crazy coincidences that took a bunch of dead ingredients ... and transformed them into something as wondrously intricate as life. And if it happened here, could it happen elsewhere?
Survival by Robbe de Hert( Visual )

Will we find life like ours on another planet? All life on Earth started as single-cell bacteria and stayed like that for 2 billion years. So how did that bacteria become the complex, colorful and diverse life that's all around us? And could this happen anywhere else in the universe? Hosted by astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison

Earth protects itself from the Sun. The David and Goliath story of Earth's relationship with its greatest threat, our seemingly benign Sun. The Sun is the big violent boss of the solar system throwing out devastating particles and deadly radiation. Without several shields - one generated by our unique planetary core, another by our atmosphere, and a third by our interconnected weather systems - life on Earth would never have survived

For the privileged few who have looked down at the Earth from space, the thin blue line of our planet sets the Earth apart from every other planet we've seen. It sustains life. The story of how the Earth creates and regulates that oxygen-rich atmosphere is mind-blowing: a flying river, a global dust storm, a collapsing glacier, and the most important creature you've never heard of. All connected together to allow life and the planet to breathe
Alien by John Frizzell( Visual )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ever since life emerged, microbes, plants and animals have all sculpted the planet's surface and atmosphere in the strangest of ways: fish poop creates islands, dead animals create mountains, and plants help create continents. From rocks to rivers, life has crafted everything that makes our planet so special. But this power of change brings with it profound dangers. Life doesn't just create. It can also destroy
Storm by Celtic Thunder (Musical group : 2007-)( Visual )

Ever wondered how our planet got here? It was born in a cosmic storm and shaped by violence. We're only here because of random collisions in a dangerous cosmos. It could have destroyed us, but instead constructed a planet from the rubble of the early solar system, gave us oceans in a bombardment from the heavens, and brought order to our world when two planets collided
Awaking( Visual )

Astronaut Chris Hadfield has left the planet three times already; now he wants to do more. After seeing the bullet holes left by asteroids on our planet's surface, he believes our only chance of survival is to escape Earth and build a colony off-world. But it will be the toughest journey humanity has ever faced: space radiation, microgravity and the bacteria inside us will conspire against us. So could we Earthlings ever survive off our one strange rock?

It's not enough for Earth to be habitable; it also has to be lethal for life to thrive. Death is hardwired into everything from our cells to the planet itself. Global mass extinctions create the opportunities which evolution seizes, boosting the biodiversity needed to survive whatever the planet throws at it. And at the heart of this story is a biological superpower - sex - life's trade-off with death to survive on a restless world

After 3 missions and 665 weightless days in space, NASA's most experienced astronaut, Peggy Whitson, smashes through the atmosphere on her final journey home - to planet Earth. With her first steps back on land, she encounters fresh air, blue skies, warm sun and, of course, gravity - there's no place like home. Or is there? Just how strange is our rock, and is it really unique in the universe?
Letters from mir : an astronaut's letters to his son by Jerry M Linenger( )

7 editions published between 2000 and 2003 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annotation Inspiring letters of an embattled astronaut in space to his young son on Earth. In January 1997, astronaut Dr. Jerry Linenger embarked on a "routine" five-month mission to the Russian space station "Mir, leaving behind his pregnant wife and 14-month-old son, and the everyday pleasures of planet Earth. Before he left, he promised to write. Though his mission did not go as planned, he kept his word. Linenger's 132 days aboard the decaying space station were beset by near-fatal glitches that at times left the crew in total darkness, tumbling out of control. Most terrifying was a raging fire that nearly destroyed the station and all on board. It was with this last event, when, with the crew cut off from the world below and locked in a battle for survival, Linenger's letters to his son changed from a routine chronicle of daily events to the heart-felt, deeply moving story shared here. At the end of each difficult day, Jerry Linenger would fly over to his ceiling-mounted laptop and write to his boy, expressing the thoughts and feelings that any father has for his child--but that too many fail to communicate. In extreme isolation and constant danger, knowing he might never see his family again, Linenger was able to "speak from the heart," sharing meditations on life and destiny, adventure and courage, love and family; and passing on wryly playful pearls of wisdom, from "Never get on a teeter-totter with someone bigger than you" to "Don't give a kiss on impulse."An inspirational and charming book, "Letters from Mir is at once a chronicle of time spent in space and a touching example of how one man's experience off the planet brought him closer to the son he loves."Dear John, "I decided before this flight that I was going to be a good father and write to you every day ... I realize that you are only one year old, and although I exaggerate your talents like any proud father would, I don't think that y
