Bosnia and Herzegovina : post-conflict reconstruction and the transition to a market economy : an OED evaluation of World Bank support by Laurie Effron( )

7 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 668 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Following three years of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), during which over 10 percent of the population were killed or wounded, and over half of the population displaced, a peace agreement, the Dayton Accords (DA), was negotiated in November 1995. The DA acknowledged the bitter ethnic divides that led to war by establishing a government structure with a weak central State; the ethnically based Entities (the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska) retained political, military, and economic authority. The DA also provided for a strong international police and military presence and an international overseer-the Office of the High Representative (OHR). Although this structure was a necessary political compromise at the time of the DA, it has presented difficult challenges to the Bank as well as other donors

World Bank lending and financial sector development by Robert Cull( )

11 editions published between 2005 and 2012 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Using a new database of World Bank loans to support financial sector development, the authors investigate whether countries that received such loans experienced more rapid growth on standard indicators of financial development than countries that did not. They account for self-selection with treatment effects regressions, and also use propensity score matching techniques. The authors' results indicate that borrowing countries had significantly more rapid growth in M2/GDP than non-borrowers, and swifter reductions in interest rate spreads and cash holdings (as a share of M2). Borrowers also had higher private credit growth rates than non-borrowers in treatment effects regressions, but not in standard panel regressions with fixed country effects. On the whole, however, the results indicate significant advantages for borrowers over non-borrowers in terms of financial development."--Page 2 of cover

We find that scale is positively related to efficiency, and that stable neighborhoods are positively related to scale. We were unable to develop a satisfactory model to explain differences in efficiency at a given scale. We examine amounts of human and physical capital used at entry and find that in spite of large amounts of entry capital compared to average incomes and in spite of significant differences in entry capital between industries, an examination of profit rates leads to the conclusion that
