Acquiescence as Differential Person Functioning by George A Johanson( Book )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The tendency for some survey respondents to be unreasonably agreeable on attitude measures with an agree-disagree format is typically termed acquiescence, or acquiescent responding (ar). This paper suggests an alternative operational definition of ar plus a statistical test for identifying ar subjects. If positively and negatively phrased items are included in attitude scales to balance the effect of ar, then traditional methods of measuring ar often require computing the difference between the sum of responses to positive items and the sum of (reverse scored) responses to negative items. Large differences are an indication of more ar. Differential person functioning (dpf) can be determined, and ar can be defined as statistically significant dpf between positively and negatively worded item groups. The Theoretical Orientation Scale for Clinicians (tosc), an inventory of principles of a new therapeutic approach known as solution-focused brief therapy, was completed by 284 counselors (175 usable inventories completed). Thirty-two subjects were identified as "yea sayers," and 8 were identified as "nay sayers." Removing these 40 dpf subjects yielded somewhat improved reliability and factor structure for the scale. The implications of removing dpf subjects from analysis are discussed. (Contains 2 figures and 19 references.) (Sld)

The effects of client and respondent variables on addiction professionals' decision making : a factorial survey by A. S McCurdy( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of 4 client variables and 10 respondent (i.e., participant) variables on two measures of addiction professionals' decision making. Data were collected using Rossi and Nock's (1982) factorial survey approach. This approach uses randomly constructed vignettes intended to represent hypothetical and life-like scenarios. Respondents are randomly assigned a predetermined number of vignettes and are then asked to make decisions about those vignettes. The factorial survey approach is inherently hierarchical, meaning that data are simultaneously collected at two levels: (a) the vignette level, and (b) the respondent level. Chi-square and hierarchical regression analyses were performed on factorial survey data collected from a sample of 124 members of the Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC). Results of the current study suggest that particular client and respondent variables influence addiction professionals' decision making. Notable client variables include the client's drug of choice, previous treatment experience, understanding of substance use, and preferred treatment goal. Notable respondent variables include level of education and addiction-specific training. Results also identified inconsistencies between select client variables and addiction professionals' decision making. This study highlights the need for increased exposure to, and training in, addiction theories and individualized treatment approaches among addiction professionals

Female counselor educator experiences earning tenure while raising a young child by Jennifer Ferrini Yensel( )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The purpose of the current study was to identify the experiences of female faculty who earned tenure in counselor education and supervision while raising at least one child under 12 years of age. A phenomenological approach was selected. Eight females who were mothers and had earned tenure in the past 3 years in counselor education and supervision were interviewed. The design of the investigation utilized a resilience framework. Resilience as the framework for the study allowed for positive experiences to be shared. Participants' shared barriers were examined to identify what pieces of resilience were present in their earning tenure while raising a child. The results of data analysis suggest that social support, positive attitudes, and enjoyment of their job contributed to female counselor educators' success in earning tenure while raising at least one young child. The following themes were identified: (a) experiences and perception of earning tenure differs between both mothers and non-mothers, but also between males and females and (b) having children while earning tenure in counselor education was a positive experience
