Recombinant human activated protein C is a new antisepsis therapy that has been shown to significantly reduce mortality from sepsis in the intensive care unit. This report presents an assessment of the cost-effectiveness of treatment from the perspective of the health care purchaser evaluating the treatment of patients with severe sepsis in the intensive care unit either with activated protein C or conventional care. Data on the cost & clinical effects of conventional care were collected from a population-based cohort in the Calgary Health Region, and the relative risk of death associated with activated protein C was taken from the current literature. Sensitivity analysis & scenario analyses were performed to check the robustness of the results and to aid decision-making in different settings & patient groups. Societal cost-effectiveness analysis & cost utility analysis were also employed to measure the cost effectiveness of activated protein C from different perspectives
