Tony Robinson sifts the facts from the fiction is this six-part history series examining British legendary heroes. Episode one: Far from being just the loser at the Battle of Hastings, King Harold was a charismatic leader who brought an end to Viking invasions. Episode two: With her flowing red hair and deadly chariot, Boudica has come to symbolise the indomitable spirit of Britain. But it is a caricature that has blurred the truth. Episode three: The man behind the Braveheart legend was a complex, charismatic rebel who rose from obscurity to become the rallying point for anti-English forces in Scotland. Episode four: There are few more famous legends than that of Robin Hood, the dispossessed nobleman who lived in Sherwood Forest with his merry men, robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. But much of that is rich fiction, as this program reveals. Episode five: The real Scottish king Macbeth was a far cry from the great Shakespearean villain, but his story was even more fascinating. Episode six: Pity poor Richard III, the much-maligned hunchback remembered most in history for the vicious murder of the two young princes in the Tower. Presenter Tony Robinson finds that much of what has been understood and spread about Richard, the last of the Wars of the Roses kings, is at best mistaken and at worst vicious fabrication.
