The James Stuart archive of recorded oral evidence relating to the history of the Zulu and neighbouring peoples by James Stuart( Book )

5 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

James Stuart was one of the most remarkable Natalians of his day. Though there was nothing outwardly spectacular about his career as a colonial official, in 25 years of single-minded labour he built up what is now regarded as the most valuable collection of African oral traditions in existence in southern Africa. As a magistrate in some of the remotest corners of the Natal colony in the 1890s and early 1900s. Stuart sought out old people who remembered the times of Dingane and Mpande, and whose fathers and mothers had been ruled by Shaka. Interviewing them in fluent Zulu, he painstakingly filled hundreds of notebooks with their reminiscences and the traditions which older generations had handed down to them. The statements which Stuart recorded from nearly 200 informants are now housed, together with his own writings on Zulu customs, language, and praise-poetry, in the Killie Campbell Africana Library in Durban. Since 1971 the department of Historical and Political Studies at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, has been engaged in a project which aims to publish all the historical evidence collected by Stuart

Tracks in a mountain range : exploring the history of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg by John B Wright( Book )

5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The declaration of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park as a World Heritage Site - on the basis of its scenic beauty, high degree of biodiversity and the exceptional cultural value of its heritage of San rock art - provides an occasion to reflect on the history and people of the region, from the earliest known times to the present. Constructed from archaeological and written sources, this book highlights the histories of the indigenous San hunter-gatherers and black farmers, as well as of the European colonisers."--BOOK JACKET
The Hlubi chiefdom in Zululand-Natal : a history by John B Wright( Book )

3 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The recorded oral history of the Hlubi goes back to an unspecified, semi-mythical time when, it is said, their ancestral chiefs lived near the Lubombo mountains, which lie along the eastern border of present-day Swaziland. About these chiefs nothing else is known, not even their names. Bryant, Stuart, and other researchers of the early 20th century recorded lists - some of them of great length - of supposed Hlubi chiefs (see Appendix), but none of these is reliable for the period before about the mid-18th century, when the Hlubi were already living on the upper Mzinyathi (Buffalo) river in what is now north-west Natal. The earliest recorded praises of their chiefs probably date from about the same period. For Knowledge of the remoter Hlubi past, the historian has to turn from oral traditions to the findings of archaeology

Computer programs for tethered-balloon system design and performance evaluation by John B Wright( Book )

3 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Six computer programs were developed to provide both standardized methods for solution of typical tethered-balloon performance problems and improved techniques sufficient to study the very high altitude tethered-balloon system design problem. The programs are written for an HP-9810A desk computer but are fully documented for conversion to other types of equipment. Preliminary results are shown indicating the feasibility of a balloon tethered at an altitude of 20 km
Computer programs for three-dimensional cable problems in tethered-balloon applications by John B Wright( Book )

2 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Three computer/calculator programs were developed to solve tethered- balloon cable problems. The programs provide information on cable tension, geometry, and spacial positions from the balloon to the surface with a variable profile of wind speeds and azimuths. One program allows the holding of a constant cable length and the determination of a new balloon altitude and cable profile for any number of different wind fields. Both printed and plotted outputs are provided. Complete documentation including flow-charts is provided to permit the programs to be adapted to computers having different language than the Hewlett Packard 9810 used in their development

in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume is the third of The James Stuart Archive. In it, the editors present a further twenty-eight documents compiled from material in the James Stuart Collection of the Killie Campbell Africana Library in Durban. James Stuart was an official in the Natal colonial civil service in the 1890s and early years of the present century. In meticulously recorded interviews with hundreds of informants, the great majority of them Africans, he assembled a vast and unique collection of notes on the traditions and customs of the Zulu and neighbouring peoples. The documents published in the successive volumes of The James Stuart Archive represent edited, annotated and translated renderings of Stuart's notes and transcriptions. The testimony which he assembled piecemeal has been arranged by the editors under the names of the informants from whom it was obtained, and is being published in alphabetical name-order. The present volume carries the sequence from Mbokodo to Mpatshana, and brings to ninety-nine the number of informants whose statements have so far been published in the series
