Blasting the future! : vorticism in Britain 1910-1920( Book )

17 editions published in 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The time is ripe for a fundamental reassessment of the impact that Futurism had on British culture and of Vorticism - the specifically British avant-garde movement inspired by the founder of the Italian Futurist movement, Filippo Tommasao Marinetti. This text, which accompanies an exhibition at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, combines novel material and original research to provide a coherent overview of Futurism and Vorticism, before, during and after World War I. The exhibition is the first major showing by the movement since 1974 and the text illustrates works in a wide range of media by England's only Futurist, C.R.W. Nevinson, and by the core of artists associated with Vorticism: Wyndham Lewis; Edward Wadsworth; Frederick Etchells; William Roberts; Henri Gaudier-Brzeska; Jacob Epstein; and Jacob Kramer. The influence exerted on these artists by the Italian Futurists Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini and the mercurial impresario of Futurism, Marinetti, is explored fully. The works illustrated are from a range of prominent public and private collections, a number having never previously been exhibited

"Edward Wadsworth was a major figure in British art of the first half of the twentieth century. He was an active participant in a number of key events: in 1913-14 he helped found the London Group as a forum for exhibiting stylistically challenging art; in 1914, alongside Wyndham Lewis, he was a leading member of the Vorticists; in the 1920s he was influential in the rappel a l'ordre and neue sachlichkeit movements, and in the 1930s he was a founder member of two radical pro-abstraction movements, Unit One and the Paris-based Abstraction-Creation." "This illustrated monograph assesses one of Britain's most talented and experimental painters and printmakers of the period and places his work within a British and European context. A complete, illustrated catalogue of the artist's paintings and drawings is included."--Jacket

Abstraction and reality : the sculpture of Ivor Roberts-Jones by Jonathan Black( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 107 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ivor Roberts-Jones (1913 1996) was one of the finest sculptors working in Britain during the twentieth century. This book is the first in-depth study of this compelling artist who was responsible for the magisterial statue of Sir Winston Churchill which stands in London's Parliament Square. It incorporates a wealth of new research and never before published images of the artist's fascinating and wide-ranging output, including his numerous major public works such as a haunting figure of controversial painter Augustus John in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, and the doomed World War I poet Rupert Brooke in Rugby, Warwickshire. It also provides the first detailed examination of Roberts-Jones's standing as one of Britain's greatest portrait sculptors for whom a wide array of impressive personalities sat. Finally it explores his significant achievement as a sculptor of wild animals and his lifelong fascination with depicting the blind and visually impaired."--Publisher description
