Strandbeest : the dream machines of Theo Jansen by Lena Herzog( Book )

5 editions published in 2014 in English and French and held by 119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For the past seven years, photographer and artist Lena Herzog has followed the evolution of a new, kinetic species. Intricate as insects, but with bursts of equine energy, the "Strandbeests" or "beach creatures," are the creation of Dutch artist Theo Jansen, who has been working for nearly two decades to develop a new life-form that moves, and even survives, on its own. Set to roam the beaches of Holland, the Strandbeests pick up the wind in their gossamer wings and spring, as if by metamorphosis, into action. As if it were blood, not the breeze, running through their delicate forms, they quiver, cavort, and trot against the sun and sea, pausing to change direction if they sense loose sand or water that might destabilize their movement. Coinciding with a travelling exhibition, Herzog's photographic tribute captures Jansen's menagerie in a meditative black and white, showcasing Jansen's imaginative vision, as well as the compelling intersection of animate and inanimate in his creatures. The result is a work of art in its own right and a mesmerizing encounter not only with a very surrealist brand of marvelous, but also with whole new ideas of existence
The bad lieutenant : port of call New Orleans by William Finkelstein( Book )

4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 76 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nicolas Cage plays a man as devoted to police work as he is to scoring drugs. A high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective, he ranges over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Adding to his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (played by Eva Mendes). Together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manicly humorous. In this book devoted to the film, renowned photographer Lena Herzog's documentation of the film captures the uniqueness of the director's vision, the set, and the actors. The volume also includes the script, written by Billy Finkelstein, reworked by Herzog

The bad lieutenant : port of call New Orleans by Werner Herzog( Visual )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sgt. Terence McDonagh of the New Orleans PD has been promoted to lieutenant, thanks to an act of bravery just after Hurricane Katrina. He jumped into the murky, rising waters of a flooded jail to save a prisoner, injured his back in the process, and now he's addicted to painkillers. That's OK, though, because McDonagh is also addicted to every drug on the planet, and helps himself by raiding the evidence room after drug busts. The slaughter of a Senegalese family--parents, grandmother, and two young children--lands in his lap. The prime suspect is drug dealer Big Fate, who causes Big Fear in the locals, so it's going to be almost impossible to find anyone to connect him to the crime. What with his constant search for drugs, his high-maintenance call girl girlfriend, and a father who's drinking himself to death, is it any wonder the Lieutenant's gone bad?
