The Porto Alegre alternative : direct democracy in action( )

12 editions published in 2004 in English and Italian and held by 1,479 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Porto Alegre in Brazil is famous as the city that pioneered a revolutionary kind of local democracy. Started over a decade ago by the municipal administration of the Brazilian Workers' Party (PT), this process -- called the 'participatory budget' -- has steadily attracted attention from around the world, including the UN and even the financial press. It was the main reason Porto Alegre came to host the first three World Social Forums in 2001, 2002 and 2003. This is the first book in English that allows the creators of the participatory budget to explain the process for themselves -- what it is, how it is achieved, what benefits it brings. Written by key figures from Porto Alegre -- including the former mayor and the head of the City Planning Office -- it provides a unique insight into the revolutionary democratic changes that have proved such a success. It is also a practical how-to-do-it guide that will help local communities and policy-makers put these ideas into action. The Porto Alegre experience shows that a truly different kind of political democracy is possible -- it presents a real alternative to the current model of liberal representative democracy that has been eroded by unelected transnational institutions and multinational corporations. This book shows how a more positive and genuinely democratic future is within our reach

The new mole : paths of the Latin American left by Emir Sader( Book )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 203 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The New Mole is a major new analysis of recent developments in Latin American politics by one of the continent's leading political thinkers. Emir Sader explains the resurgence of radicalism in terms of the region's history and explores its theoretical underpinning. The book is unusual in combining succinct judgements with broad chronological and geographical sweep--covering a period running from the early twentieth century to the present and detailing the political interplay between nations. Sader points to areas where Latin America offers new insights to the world--on indigenous questions, for example--and areas where political thought lags behind practice, as in Venezuela. He also examines the process of regional integration under way in Latin America, which stands out because it is occurring independently of Washington. Looking at the role of political and ideological struggles in defining the continent's trajectory, Sader concludes with an optimistic affirmation of agency that is all the more convincing for its sobriety."--Jacket
Narcoland : the Mexican drug lords and their godfathers by Anabel Hernández( Book )

9 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Explosive, best-selling account of Mexico’s drug cartels and the government-business nexus that enables them. The product of five years’ investigative reporting, the subject of intense national controversy, and the source of death threats that forced the National Human Rights Commission to assign two full-time bodyguards to its author, Anabel Hernández, Narcoland has been a publishing and political sensation in Mexico. The definitive history of the drug cartels, Narcoland takes readers to the front lines of the “war on drugs,” which has so far cost more than 60,000 lives in just six years. Hernández explains in riveting detail how Mexico became a base for the mega-cartels of Latin America and one of the most violent places on the planet. At every turn, Hernández names names – not just the narcos, but also the politicians, functionaries, judges and entrepreneurs who have collaborated with them. In doing so, she reveals the mind-boggling depth of corruption in Mexico’s government and business elite. Hernández became a journalist after her father was kidnapped and killed and the police refused to investigate without a bribe. She gained national prominence in 2001 with her exposure of excess and misconduct at the presidential palace, and previous books have focused on criminality at the summit of power, under presidents Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón. In awarding Hernández the 2012 Golden Pen of Freedom, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers noted, “Mexico has become one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, with violence and impunity remaining major challenges in terms of press freedom. In making this award, we recognize the strong stance Ms. Hernández has taken, at great personal risk, against drug cartels.” This updated edition includes a new chapter detailing the arrest of “El Chapo” Guzman, the notorious leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, whose incredible escape from his previous incarceration was exposed as an inside job by this book. -- Provided by publisher
