Work experience : expanding opportunities for undergraduates by Lee Harvey( Book )

1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In view of the increasing emphasis on work experience in higher education (he), a research project was undertaken to identify and compare current practices in the area of work-based learning in undergraduate programs. The study, which focused primarily on work experience in the United Kingdom, involved a literature review and site visits and telephone interview during which input was obtained from representatives of the following: he institutions, student employment bureaus, training and enterprise councils, employer organizations, work experience brokers, student associations, and national voluntary agencies. Special attention was paid to the following topics: learning and work experience; embedded work experience; project-linked work experience; and term-time, part-time, and vacation work. It was discovered that, despite the important benefits of work experience to employers, students, and he academic staff, expansion of such programs is being impeded by three categories of barriers: lack of resources, organization barriers, and discrepancies between supply and demand. Specific actions that employers, students, he staff, he institutions, broker agencies, and the government can take to overcome barriers were identified. (The report contains 87 references. Appended are discussions of varieties of work experience and the organizational approach and work experience and a list of contributors.) (mn)

Funding higher education : student perspectives by Selena Mason( Book )

2 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report documents the results of a survey of 1,139 students at the University of Central England (uce) in Birmingham in regard to their financial circumstances and their views on the funding of higher education. The report also examines the advantages and disadvantages of six specific higher education funding proposals put forth in recent years. The survey found that the majority of students received some form of maintenance grant, that more students received financial support from their parents than took out student loans, and that less than five percent of students had received money from either the uce hardship fund or the access fund. The report recommends that higher education should remain free at the point of entry, that funding should facilitate life-long learning, that higher education administration should be made more efficient and accountable, that distance learners and part-time students should have the same rights as full-time students, and that students should contribute toward the cost of their education as part of a retrospective, income-dependent contribution scheme. Three appendixes provide a copy of the survey form, information on the student sample, and a description of the Australian model of higher education funding. (Mdm)
