The effects of author sex on students' evaluations of student writing by Janna Graham( )

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Author sex affects readers' perceptions of writing. Philip Goldberg found that female undergraduates judged professional writing with a female author name less favorably than the same writing with a male name, a bias confirmed by Michele A. Paludi and William D. Bauer and by Paludi and Lisa Strayer. The present study asked writing students to evaluate student writing. Identical writing samples with different author names were distributed to respondents. Respondents' evaluations showed differentiations corresponding to author name. The writing with a female name, however, garnered more favorable evaluations than the writing with a male name, and the sex-ambiguous name triggered anomalous evaluations. As peer review is a vital part of composition class work, bias in students' evaluations of student writing consistently undermines the development of students as writers. Documenting such bias is an important step toward creating writing classrooms that offer an equally supportive learning environment to all students
