An attempt of suicide prevention : the Slovene Gotland Study by Andrej Marušič( )

3 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The main objective of this ongoing study was to show that an intensive educational programme on depression as organised for primary care doctors can lead to a significant reduction of suicide rate. Another aim was to decrease the ratio of prescriptions of anxiolitics and antidepressants. Two, from suicide most affected Slovene regions were selected. Within one month a great majority of regional primary care doctors (N = 103) were educated. The educational programme covered two lectures related to suicide and depression, each followed by a workshop (altogether 4 hours). Successfulness was tested bytwo means: number of suicides, and number of prescriptions of anxiolitics and antidepressants were monitored and compared to the same period in the previous year. We obtained significant increase in number of these doctors' prescriptions of antidepressants as compared to the same period in the year before (50%), and as compared to the rest of the doctors in Slovenia (below 20%; Chi-Square = 558; p = 0.0001). Longer period of observation will be needed to test for statistical significance of a similarly apparent decline ofsuicides in the two regions. As this is still an ongoing study no major conclusions can be made. However, the obtained significant increase in prescriptions of antidepressants is promising and it does speak in favour of depression being diagnosed and treated more effectively than before, which canin turn lead to decline in suicide rates in the two regions
