Egypt's sunken treasures( Book )

7 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 536 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the shallow waters off the coasts of Egypt, the French underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio discovered and excavated parts of three ancient cities: Alexandria, Herakleion, Egypt's ancient gateway to the Mediterranean, and the old port of Canopus. Modern technology has made it possible to recover relics, including statuary, jewellery, pediments, stone tablets and fragments of buildings, all lost for nearly two thousand years. Like a giant puzzle, the individual pieces have been fitted together and breathed new life into Egyptian history." "In photographs of the excavation process, Egypt's Sunken Treasures enables the reader to follow the fate of three ancient cities in the Nile Delta and to look at the valuable clues as to how their citizens lived and worshipped."--Jacket

Diving to the pharaohs : Franck Goddio's discoveries in Egypt by Jürgen Bischoff( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the spring of 1992, acknowledged pioneer of modern maritime archaeology Franck Goddio (born in Casablanca in 1947 and dedicated to archaeology since the early 1980s) set out to locate the port facilities and palace quarter of the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria, founded in 331 BC. Equipped with cutting-edge sonar and nuclear magnetic resonance technology capable of detecting structures hidden deep in sediment, never before had maritime archaeologists put so much effort and technology into uncovering the mysteries of human history. Years later Goddio extended his search to include the Bay of Aboukir, where he discovered cities that had been swallowed up by the sea more than a thousand years before, along with huge temples, colossal statues and the world's largest ancient ship cemetery to date. "Diving to the pharaohs" offers a first-hand account of this thrilling journey into the past, following Goddio's divers on their underwater ventures. It depicts life on board a research vessel and provides exciting insights into the scientific findings. What was life like for the people of the pharaonic kingdom more than 2,000 years ago? How did they celebrate their feasts and festivals? Why did their cities vanish? These and more questions are answered in this book in the original text by accomplished science writer Jürgen Bischoff, and photos by one of the world's most respected underwater photographers Christoph Gerigk, many of which appear here for the first time in print. Exhibition: The British Museum, London, UK (19.5.-27.11.2016), Rietberg Museum, Zürich, Switzerland (10.2.-13.8.2017)

Evoking the classic dive books popularized by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, this limited-edition, leatherbound publication follows the underwater expedition that accompanied Damien Hirst's latest project, 'Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable'. Shot in the Indian Ocean over a number of years, the extraordinary underwater images of the artworks' recovery were photographed by Christoph Gerigk, who has twice been awarded the World Press Photo Foundation's prize for international photojournalism for his work on Egypt's sunken cities. Also featured are photographs of the above-water operation by Steve Russell Studios. Signed by the artist and numbered in an edition of 1,000, the publication includes 128 full-color images, 94 of which are double-page spreads.

1 edition published in 2017 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
