Helioseismology, asteroseismology, and mhd connections by Laurent Gizon( )

15 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and held by 413 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents a timely snapshot of the state of helio- and asteroseismology in the era when SOHO/MDI is about to be replaced by SDO/HMI and CoRoT is yielding its first long-duration light curves of thousands of stars. This "Topical Issue of Solar Physics" is inspired by two seminal conferences, HELAS II and SOHO19/GONG 2007, and was open for general submission on the core topics of these conferences. Three papers describing the current status of asteroseismology, global helioseismology, and local helioseismology were specially commissioned for the volume, and these set the context for the other contributions
Differential rotation in Sun-like stars from surface variability and asteroseismology by Martin Bo Nielsen( )

3 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Thanks to helioseismology we know the internal rotation of the Sun as a function of radius and latitude. The presence of a shear at the base of the solar convection zone is thought to play a key role in the generation of magnetic fields. So far however, the internal rotation profiles of stars other than the Sun are unknown, and placing constraints on models of rotation and magnetic dynamos is therefore difficult.. The NASA Kepler mission has provided high-quality photometric data that can be used to study the rotation of stars with two different techniques; asteroseismology and surface acti
Non-axisymmetric magnetic flux transport in the sun by David Martín Belda( )

3 editions published between 2017 and 2018 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The solar magnetic field drives a wide range of phenomena, from sunspots to flares and coronal mass ejections. This field is maintained against ohmic dissipation by means of a hydromagnetic dynamo. In recent years, evidence has accumulated in support of a particular family of dynamo models, Babcock-Leighton models, where the surface fields play a key role. Specifically, the surface transport of magnetic flux coming from emerged regions regenerates the global dipole field, which is the source of the subsurface toroidal field for the next cycle. Many global dynamo models rely on the approxima
Magnetohydrodynamic Simulation of Reconnection in Turbulent Astrophysical Plasmas by Fabien Widmer( )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Turbulence is ubiquitous at large-Reynolds-number astrophysical plasmas like in the Solar corona. In such environments, the turbulence is thought to enhance the energy conversion rate by magnetic reconnection above the classical model predictions. Since turbulence cannot be simulated together with the large scale behaviour of the plasma, magnetic reconnection is studied through the average properties of turbulence. A Reynolds-averaged turbulence model is explored in which turbulence is self-sustained and -generated by the large scales (mean-) field inhomogeneities. Employing that model, the
Measuring vortical flows in the solar interior by Jan Langfellner( )

Crustal thickness from seismic noise correlations in preparation for the InSight mission to Mars by Gesa Karen Becker( )

Simulating the signature of starspots in stellar oscillations by Emanuele Papini( )

Studies of the radial gradient of rotation near the solar surface by Atefeh Barekat( )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Continuous observations of solar oscillations over the last twenty years have provided an opportunity to investigate interior properties of the Sun and their variations over the last two solar cycles. In this thesis, I focus on measuring the radial gradient of the rotation rate close to the surface of the Sun and its variations during solar cycle 23 and 24. For this study, I used for the first time f mode frequency splitting data obtained from 360-day time series of Medium-l data from both the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI: 1996-2010) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory and the
Slender Ca II H fibrils observed by SUNRISE/SuFI by Ricardo Jorge Maranhas Gafeira( )

This thesis is devoted to analyzing the morphological and oscillatory properties of slender \caiih{} fibrils (SCFs) in the lower solar chromosphere. The aim of this study is to deepen our understanding of the physical nature of these structures and their relevance for the energetics in the solar chromosphere and the layers above. For this purpose, we use seeing-free high spatial and temporal resolution data in the line core of the \caiih{} line, which is formed in the chromosphere. A time series of narrow-band images in this line of almost 1 hour was obtained during the second science flig

Analysis of time series of solar-like oscillations : Applications to the Sun and HD 52265 = Zeitreihenanalyse sonnenähnlicher Oszillationen Anwendung auf Beobachtungen der Sonne und HD52265 by Thorsten Stahn( )

2 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study of stellar oscillations allows one to constrain the structure and dynamics of stellar interiors to a precision that cannot be achieved with other methods. This dissertation focusses on the measurements of the parameters (frequencies, amplitudes, linewidths, and rotational splitting) of the global modes of solar-like oscillations observed in the Sun and in the Sun-like star HD52265. The thesis is organized in three main parts: (i)an implementation and validation of a global fit of stellar oscillation power spectra using solar observations, (ii) an application of this method to original 4-month-long CoRoT observations of the planet-hosting, solar-like star HD52265, and (iii) an extension of the fitting method to time series with gaps. The main results concern HD52265: the mode frequencies of the radial, dipole and quadrupole modes are measured with the highest precision achieved so far for a solar-type star and, for the first time, the effect of rotation on oscillations in a solar-type star are measured without a doubt. Furthermore, the seismic constraint on the inclination angle of the stellar rotation axis allows us to estimate the absolute mass of the companion. Accordingly the seismic analysis strongly suggests that the companion is a planet and not a brown dwarf

Helioseismology and the dynamics of the solar interior by M. J Thompson( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The articles republished in this book survey and summarize recent research in helioseismology as well as studies of the interior structure, dynamics and magnetism of the solar interior that are being tested and refined using the helioseismic results. Helioseismology has in the last few decades become a highly productive technique for studying the Sun's interior from observations of the vibrations of its surface. The vibrations are manifestations of resonant modes of the Sun that are continuously excited by turbulent motions in the Sun's convection zone, and a plethora of data have been obtained from dedicated ground-based and space-based observing systems. The book will be of particular interest to researchers and graduate students in the fields of helioseismology, solar interior dynamics and the solar dynamo. It will also be of interest to researchers in solar physics, solar activity, stellar physics, astrophysical fluid dynamics and asteroseismology. Analysis of small scale solar magnetic fields using Hinode SOT/SP by David Bühler( )

2 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis presents an analysis of small magnetic structures found in the solar photosphere. All the work presented in the following chapters is primarily based on data obtained from the spectropolarimeter aboard the Hinode satellite. The spectropolarimeter provides seeing-free, high spectral resolution (30mA) and spatial (0."32) resolution data of the full Stokes vector of the Zeeman sensitive Fe I line pair at 6300A. Chapter 2 investigates internetwork magnetic fields found on the disc centre of the quiet Sun. These fields are characterized by their predominantly sub-kG strength, their
